BMW Motorrad has shown what can be built around the in-line "two" from the middle "goose" F850GS

Tue, 26 Jun 2018

The 9Cento is a sports tourer with crossover features, and its appearance evokes associations of Italian design. So, for example, the short sportbike “tail” unobtrusively resembles the upturned, stunningly beautiful stern of Ducati Panigale sportbikes. The motorcycle is built on the basis of an in-line two-cylinder engine from the BMW F850GS, and we would not completely rule out the possibility of such a handsome man appearing in the production program.

Husqvarna (and KTM for that matter) is different because the company builds bikes for not only the avid motocrosser, but for the hardcore off-roader, too.

Well, one reason is the manufacturers want us to get special dispensation before we take their bikes to a foreign country, you need to buy Mexican insurance, everybody speaks a weird language down there, you can’t drink the water… those are all really easy obstacles to overcome, and I’m told you can drink the Baja water now.

Fresh Swedish styling on proven Austrian performance Credit: Photos by Evans Brasfield Husqvarna, a company better known for its off-road bikes – or chainsaws, depending on who you ask – made big waves in the motorcycle world three years ago when the Austrian-owned Swedish brand announced it would enter the street bike market with concepts of its Vitpilen and Svartpilen models. Fast forward to EICMA last November, and there they were, in the flesh and on the floor – real motorcycles. 2018 Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 Editor Score: 89.75% Engine 18.5/20 Suspension/Handling 14.0/15 Transmission/Clutch 9.0/10 Brakes 9.5/10 Instruments/Controls 3.0/5 Ergonomics/Comfort 9.0/10 Appearance/Quality 8.75/10 Desirability 9.0/10 Value 9.0/10 Overall Score 89.75/100 2018 Husqvarna Vitpilen 401 Editor Score: 85.75% Engine 18.5/20 Suspension/Handling 14.0/15 Transmission/Clutch 9.0/10 Brakes 9.5/10 Instruments/Controls 3.0/5 Ergonomics/Comfort 7.0/10 Appearance/Quality 7.75/10 Desirability 8.5/10 Value 8.5/10 Overall Score 85.75/100 Admittedly, at first I was less than impressed, and after elbowing my way through the crowd to see what all the fuss was about, I was still left scratching my head, somewhat disappointed – like a kid who got Irish Spring soap and a pack of fresh tighty-whiteys for Christmas.

2018 MV Agusta Brutale 800 RR First Ride Review

Thu, 15 Mar 2018

A better Brutale, but a little shy of expectation Credit: Videos by Sean Matic Billing yourself as a boutique manufacturer of motorcycle art invites intense scrutiny and whether fair or unfair, a cosmetic blemish or performance shortcoming when found is profoundly magnified. It’s the cross MV Agusta must bear, along with its tumultuous history of financial liquidity as well as its family history of adopted ownerships. Regardless the burden, MV remains relevant by ceaselessly pushing the boundaries of motorcycle design by offering enthusiasts something more than a two-wheel commodity.

2018 Royal Enfield Himalayan First Ride Review

Fri, 09 Mar 2018

The Sherpa of things to come Royal Enfield designed and built this motorcycle in India, for Indians, a few years ago, with no plans really to export it. Why bother? India took over from China last year as the world’s biggest motorcycle market; Indians buy something like 48,000 motos a day (which probably includes lots of scooters and mopeds, but you get the picture – something like 17.7 million a year).

The motorcycle has a 300cc engine from a naked BN302, but in a slightly derated format - it develops 34 hp and 27 Nm (naked has 37 “horses” and 26 Nm).

Yamaha FJR1300 will serve the law

Fri, 16 Feb 2018
