Just Finishing is a Victory: Filming the Ironman Triathlon [Video]

Tue, 27 Dec 2011

A 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride and a 26.2-mile run. That is what defines the Ironman Trianthlon, one of the most physically grueling competitions in the world, a race so harsh, the sport’s mantra is “Just Finishing is a Victory.” Victory Motorcycles has released a video showing a different side of the famous Ironman World Championship at Kona, Hawaii, taken from the perspective of the motorcycle-riding camera operators which film the  annual race. Victory sponsored some of the camera teams that filmed this year’s race for outlets such as NBC television and the 12-minute video shows some of the work that goes into this subset of motorcycle riding.

When it comes to improving the performance of a motorcycle’s weakest link, Nick Ienatsch and Ken Hill have taken on an enormous task. You see, this link is always changing and never constant, but can be molded and improved. It’s not a motorcycle at all.

Xaus tests Moto2 Bimota

Thu, 22 Dec 2011

World Superbike regular, Ruben Xaus was impressing some track day regulars with his skills earlier this month at Almeria. The lanky Spaniard (who is now apparently a part owner of Bimota), was putting the Rimini manufacturer's Honda CBR600-powered Moto2 machine through its paces in the December sunshine. The short term plan if for it to be raced in domestic championships but I for one would love to see it on the MotoGP Moto2 grid.

Bridgestone tyres 2012 sneak preview

Thu, 22 Dec 2011

In November Bridgestone were shooting their 2012 range of tyres ready for launches next year. I was invited to the super-short Snetterton 100 to help out with riding some bikes. It hadn’t been long since I'd ridden at Snetterton and I was all too familiar with the new part of the track named ‘the 100’.

Tested: EXO2 Heated Jacket

Thu, 22 Dec 2011

It still amazes me how few people know about heated clothing. The cold is a major factor in why people put their bikes away for the winter but if you wear the right kit, you can comfortably ride all year 'round. The EXO2 Stormrider jacket can be plugged into your bike's battery or powered by a rechargeable battery pack.

This isn't Rossi's GP12

Wed, 21 Dec 2011

Unless you've been in a cave for the past decade, you'll know that Valentino Rossi loves a special paintjob, whether that's on his lids, bikes, cars or even his massive motorhome. This design by Nicolas Ceroni shows what Valentino's GP12 could look like in testing guise. Let's be honest, it's not going to look like this, as Valentino is actually quite restrained with his pre-season test paintjobs.

The celebrity motorcycle of choice is..

Mon, 19 Dec 2011

When you're a 'celebrity' and you're after a motorcycle the formula is often: cost ( money no object) x style ( taste questionable) / number of said motorcycles due for production = chance of you buying that bike The bike at the top of this list almost always appears to be a Confederate of some sort. The bespoke bikes are made in Alabama, cost a small fortune and production is limited to around 30 units a year. The current list of owners includes: Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Bruce Springsteen, David Beckham, Ryan Reynolds and Nicolas Cage.

Video: Catalunya 2009, that pass

Mon, 19 Dec 2011

The battle between Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo from Catalunya was one of the most memorable and thrilling races from recent years, a definite candidate for one of the Greatest Grand Prix races - ever. Passing Lorenzo at the final corner was the defining moment that is still talked about today, but for me the most incredible and bold pass made by Rossi in those final few laps was out-braking his former Yamaha team-mate around the outside into turn one.

Randy de Puniet's custom W650

Fri, 16 Dec 2011

MotoGP star Randy de Puniet commissioned Deus customs to build him a motorcycle for the streets of Sydney. Randy's brief was for a middleweight, 2-up twin that would be light enough to slice through the city streets and have the power for blasts on the open road, and have orange, black and white for the paint. Deus chose the Kawasaki W650, lowered it at both ends, fitted an SR500 tank, lobbed the old air box and added K&N filters, stuck on a custom 2-into-2 exhaust system and added low-profile fenders to finish off the clean and simple look.

Five minutes with Neil Hodgson

Wed, 14 Dec 2011

Commentating on Eurosport, demo riding at bike shows, instructing on track days and being the Ducati 848 Challenge ambassador are just a few of the jobs that keep Neil Hodgson amused these days. Last week I tripped over the 2003 World Superbike Champion in Almeria so a few personal questions had to be asked. N.M. You seem to have a permanent grin on your face these days, any particular reason?
