At the end of the day Valentino Rossi was standing upon the podium showering the adoring masses in champagne, but the battle for third was more important than 16 points. The man sitting in his garage practicing his acceptance speech and planting the name ‘Jorge Lorenzo’ to the list of MotoGP Champions; took a personal win on Sunday. The duel between the giant egos of Rossi versus Lorenzo shadowed the battle of Catalunya from last season, which included the pass of the century.

FORMER MOTOGP World Champion Casey Stoner has spoken about the dangers of motorcycle racing, following the death of talented Moto2 star Shoya Tomizawa. This remarkable shot of Eddie Lawson is taken by Rich Chenet. It was August 1980 and Lawson was undergoing a titanic scrap for the AMA title with Wes Cooley and Freddie Spencer here at Pocono Raceway in Philladelphia. The circuit is known as the 'Tricky Triangle' amongst the NASCAR drivers but the superbikes used a mix of infield and sections of the banked circuit.

With the two test riders coming forward to act as replacement riders for the injured Rossi and Aoyama, it brought back memories of the days when the grid would be gifted with wildcard riders from the respective countries. The Japanese rounds were always attended by some of the top guys with experience of the 500GP and MotoGP bikes, through racing them in their domestic championships. What resulted was getting to witness the exciting and talented Japanese riders, and bring new riders to the attention of the teams.

WITH BIKES LAPPING at 18 seconds off times posted by the AMA Superbikes, competitors in the inaugural TTXGP North America series still enjoyed a good old scrap at Infineon Raceway, California. An eclectic mix of bikes lined up for the start of the 2010 TTXGP series; a modified 1966 Norton and a 2010 Mavizen TTX02 Superbike were just two of the machines that took part in the race. US rider Shawn Higbee took victory in the event, riding for team Zero Agni.

Jean Philippe Ruggia, 1988, Coppice at Donington Park, Sonauto-Yamaha 250. This is elbow lean action. There was a previous blog entry of Ben Spies and his elbow grazing the tarmac onboard the M1 Yamaha, I admit it is impressive but I find myself admiring the horizontal angles that Ruggia submitted his 250 Yamaha to, with the above image taken at Coppice as a prime example.

GAMING GIANT Capcom has released screen shots for Moto GP 09/10, ahead of the game's demo premier this Thursday.The latest in the Moto GP series is said to take an "exciting new direction rewarding players for racing style and skill on the track".The demo will offer players a chance to compete in one of three great game modes – Championship mode, Time Trial and the all new Arcade mode where you win time extensions for executing skilful manoeuvres. Put in a bad performance and your dreams of racing to victory will be over.MotoGP 09/10 will be available at retail across Europe and Australia on March 19th. Fans will be able to compete in the most up-to-date racing experience earlier than ever before with the 2010 season content available to download free of charge shortly after launch.

1974: Onboard an MV racer with Phil Read

ANOTHER CRACKING BIT of vintage racing footage, this time featuring multiple motorcycle world champion Phil Read on the awesome-sounding MV Agusta 500-4.The footage is from the 1974 movie 'The Iron Horse' made by Frenchman Pierre-William Glenn.Read’s 1974 500cc World Championship victory was the last year a four-stroke won the world title before the advent of the MotoGP class in 2002. Giacomo Agostini won the crown from Yamaha in 1975, followed by Suzuki-mounted Barry Sheene in '76 and '77. The footage is bloody good, considering the camera technology of the day.
