Ducati Supersport description

For sale is my beautiful cafe racer based on a Ducati 900 Superlight 1993 (Number 718).

The base motorcycle is a rare 1993 Ducati Superlight, the only vintage featuring aluminum-magnesium Akront-Marvic wheels. Unfortunately the bike had been neglected for some time and it was going to be difficult to restore it to original. Besides, cafe racers based on the 900SS platform are some of the most alluring machines out there … So I decided to take a different direction.

Here is a list of the restoration work and the upgrades performed in the past ten months:

Bodywork:

  • Tank: Internal de-rusting, new fuel pump, filter and fittings; new CNC machined billet aluminum cap; new rubber pads
  • Seat mounts repair and reinforcement
  • Custom paint job, based on the Ducati corsa red, but deeper
  • Custom-made number pads and stickers, reminiscent of the original Superlight graphics, but without words for a more minimalistic and sophisticated look
  • Corbin carbon leather seat (See detail picture)
  • Minimalistic carbon cowl from a Monster S4RS and Zero Gravity “Corsa” windshield. You can also remove it for a more minimalistic look (See picture)
  • Bobber headlight and CNC mounting brackets
  • CNC handlebar mirrors
  • High-quality carbon fiber front and rear mud guards, belt covers, sprocket and chain covers, cable covers (custom-made), front cowl and under-seat mudguard/plate holder (very rare)
Performance enhancements:
  • Ducabike fully adjustable CNC handlebars
  • Fast by Ferracci fully adjustable CNC pegs (very rare and super nice)
  • New Spiegler performance break lines (front and rear) and clutch line
  • 19mm rear brake master cylinder Brembo for greater modularity
  • 29mm Oberon clutch slave cylinder for less clutch effort and greater modularity
  • Gorgeous Spark carbon fiber and polished stainless steel high-mount exhaust (street legal, sounds amazing)
  • K&N filter and proper carb jetting. New carb floats and gaskets
  • New Bitubo fully adjustable steering damper
Gauges and electrical:
  • Acewell programmable digital gauge (Speedometer, Tachometer, Odometer, Trip meter; Turning, Neutral, High Beam, Oil Pressure and Red-Triangle LED indicators)
  • New regulator/rectifier from Electrosport (much better and stronger than OEM)
  • New high voltage California Cycleworks ignition coils
  • New Motobatt 20Ah battery
  • New NGK plugs
  • Switches, cabling and all electrical carefully inspected, replaced with OEM or cleaned
  • New right side and left side handlebar controls will be installed before purchase
General:
  • Metal parts cleaned, polished and restored throughout
  • Stainless steel screws and bolts throughout

In terms of major maintenance, I have all the original receipts from the previous owners showing valves were checked and belts were replaced around 9,000 miles. The bike had 13,000 miles when I replaced the gauge (See pictures) and I put another ~100 on it so it has a few thousand miles before the next big check. Oil was changed ~100 miles ago and brake oil was replaced during the recent upgrades. The brake lines, the clutch line and the master and slave cylinders were replaced and tested by certified Ducati professionals at the Ducati Service center in Medford, MA. In that occasion, the the bike was taken for a test ride and nothing wrong was found.

The engine runs well and strong, the bike is extremely lightweight and agile, yet precise and firm when driven sportily. It is a pleasure to ride. To be upfront, here are four issues:

  • It has a reconstructed title (See picture). I had no problem registering and insuring in MA and the same was true it was for the previous owners in IL and CA.
  • The paint job on the tank was not perfectly done. There are a few imperfections under the layer of color that show that my shop didn’t thoroughly sand and remove the previous layer before paining over. You will notice if you pay attention in certain light conditions (See detail picture).
  • The engine runs strong, like I said, but if you want to make this a collector piece cafe racer you may want to take it down and sand and/or repaint some parts. After 23 years some of the paint is starting to peel off (See detail pictures). On that occasion, you may want to repaint the frame as well. I cleaned and repainted only the exterior of the frame and everywhere I could get without removing the engine (While obviously masking all components of the bike) and the result is very pleasing with hardly noticeable overlap of the old and the new paint on the inside of the trellis tubes. However, if your goal is a collector cafe racer, repainting the frame should be on your list.
  • I was hoping to turn the Red-Triangle LED indicator into an indicator for fuel reserve, but the fuel sensor may not be functioning properly, so the LED is always half lit.

That’s pretty much all … This bike was a heartfelt project and I am proud that a motorcycle that had been neglected has now a second life as a strong performance and beautiful machine. Nevertheless, I have to face the fact that this bike is never going to be comfortable for two or for taking long trips and I must sell to buy something more suitable.

Please have a close look at the pictures and let me know if you have any questions. I will include two new carb bodies and several spare parts with the bike.

I would be happy to show the bike to serious buyers before purchase. Buyer is responsible for shipping, but I will assist at the time. Bike is sold as is.

Good luck!

Marco

French Moto Website Anticipates Versys 1000 at EICMA 2011

Mon, 24 Oct 2011

Musings of a liter-size engined Kawasaki Versys have circulated the web for a few years now, as loyalists of the likable Versys 650, as well as displacement-driven riders waiting in the wings, have pondered the potential of a more powerful adventure bike from Kawasaki that’s in the same league as BMW’s R1200GS and Yamaha’s Super Tenere. Alas, nothing of the sort has ever left the lips of Kawasaki, let alone go into production. Recently, however, the French motorcycle website, Moto-net.com, has produced convincing images that appear like photos of a complete Versys 1000, including matching hard luggage.

2013 Ducati Multistrada 1200 Specs Released

Thu, 20 Sep 2012

When Ducati announced the updates for the 2013 Multistrada 1200 lineup this week, it was very vague on the details. We know the engine received some updates and the Ohlins suspension had been replaced with a new semi-active “Skyhook” suspension system, and of course, we learned about the new Multistrada 1200S Granturismo variant. It took a couple of days but Ducati has released full specifications for its Multistrada 1200 lineup, shedding some more light on the 2013 models.

WSBK: 2012 Magny-Cours Results – Championship Decided by Half a Point

Tue, 09 Oct 2012

You would think carrying a 30.5 point lead into the final round of the 2012 World Superbike Championship would be a safe enough margin to win the title. Aprilia‘s Max Biaggi made it interesting, inexplicably crashing out of the first race at the finale in Magny-C0urs before scoring a fifth place finish in Race Two to give him a 0.5 point margin over Kawasaki‘s Tom Sykes to win the title. The 358 to 357.5 point difference is the narrowest finish ever in WSBK.
