1972 Yamaha DS7 250 chassis and body work mated with full RD400 mechanics: Engine/gearbox, suspension, wheels, disk brakes.
** There are some broken fins on the left side of the engine, but this is the way the donor motor was sourced and does not affect the running/performance. Please see the additional pics in photobucket link.
A Yamaha race mechanic did the conversion before I bought it and then my race tuner and me did the following:
- New DG pipes - perfectly sealed up at the manifolds
- Carbs rejetted
- Stock pegs / shifter / rear brake pedal shortened and modified into rear sets
- New NHK steering dampener installed (mounts welded to the frame)
- Clubman bars added
- New coils
- New Avon Roadrunner tires & tubes
- Front brake caliper rebuilt
- Gas tank cleaned and POR15 coated
- Front suspension rebuilt with fresh oil - 20cc additional input into each leg to increase compression dampening
- Oil pump has been disconnected and it runs premix fuel/oil in the tank (I've never trusted older 2-stroke auto-lube systems and always opt for premix in the tank for greater reliability)

The engine/gearbox has approximately 3,500miles. All of the additional work and parts have approximately 5 miles on it. The pipes, tires, steering dampener are virtually brand new. This is a very, very unique and very fast bike. Shorter than a RD400 which makes is very nimble, but much, much faster than a DS7. The turn signals have been taken off, but all the wiring is intact and I have them to go with the bike. It has never been stored outside and besides a little surface rust where the pegs were shortened and rewelded, the frame and overall condition is excellent. The wheels are in excellent condition and not pitted or have that white aluminum haze. Please keep in mind that this was very time consuming project to build and the bike is neither a 250 or a 400, but something that takes the best of both types of machines. If you ever thought about creating a short famed monster of a 2-stroke machine...here it is. I have many more pics available online - just send me a note and I'll give you the link. You'll see that besides the cost in parts, there is a great deal of workman ship in adding in the mounting for the hydraulic braking as well as to keep the stock look of the footpegs but cutting/welding them into rear sets that make sitting on the bike with the clubmans much more comfortable and correct. Please note that the bike hasn't been started since the tank was coated/sealed up last June. After tuning/riding the bike once completed, there was some rust in the fuel lines, so it was brought back inside and the tank was coated/sealed up. I have many bikes so, I didn't mind it sitting pretty in my shop. You'll need a new or good battery as well as to hook up the fuel line cross over and to the carbs. I have no doubt that it will start right up with a few primer kicks and then a couple of good kicks with the ignition on once you have premix in the tank.

Yamaha Motor Europe has recently posted up on YouTube a delightful video about their riders.  Their secret for being so good at what they do is that they totally immerse themselves in Yamaha by working at the Yamaha offices. Hilarity ensues.
