Its capacity was 528 cc and it had a 57 mm bore with a 51.8 mm stroke. Its compression ratio was 9.5-to-1. Its induction system consisted of four 28 mm Mikuni carburetors, and it had a battery-powered inductive ignition system. Its maximum torque output was 31.8 foot-pounds at 7,500 rpm. It had a six-speed transmission with a chain drive.

Suspension, Brakes and Wheels
The front suspension consisted of telescopic coil spring forks and it had 137 mm of wheel travel. The rear suspension consisted of a swing arm with two dampers that were adjustable for preload, and it had 80 mm of travel. The front brake consisted of dual discs that measured 298 mm, and the rear brake consisted of an expanding drum. The front tire measured 3 inches in width, and supported a 19-inch rim. The front tire measured 3.25 inches in width and 19 inches in diameter. The rear tire measured 5.11 inches in width and had a 16-inch rim. Overall, the cycle had a dry weight of 407.85 pounds and its fuel tank has a capacity of 3.4 gallons. Its fuel consumption averaged 55 mpg, and its top speed was 112 mph.

Body Design
The Yamaha XJ550 Maxim was a custom cruiser bike, with an exposed engine, no fairing and a design that went heavy on the chrome and light on the plastic. In fact, the engine, the exhaust pipe and the chassis were all chrome-plated. The seat was designed to allow the rider to lean back while riding, with his arms and legs stretched out in front of him to touch the handlebars and footpegs.

Value
When it was new, the Yamaha XJ550 Maxim went for $2,599 to $2,699. As of 2012, a used Maxim may fetch anywhere from $400 for a "fixer-upper" model to $1,650 for a model in good condition.
