Vincent Black Shadow Series C

The Vincent Black Shadow was produced by Vincent HRD from 1948 with the series ‘C’ being introduced the following year. Developed from the Rapide, with Comet cams and an increased compression ratio, producing 55bhp and allowing a top speed of 120mph it became so popular that production numbers exceeded those of the Rapide. Technically advanced, the 998cc v-twin engine was used as a stressed member instead of being carried inside the frame and with new features such as girdraulic forks, sprung rear sub-frame and a unit construction engine, all weighing under 460lb (about the same as a pre-war 500cc bike). The name ‘Black’ Shadow was appropriate as the entire bike was coloured black including enamel crank-case covers which made it quite different from anything else at a time when the trend was for engines and parts to be polished and chromed. Other visual changes included the addition of a 150mph speedometer. Philip Vincent was not prepared to compromise the quality of his machines and in the face of escalating costs the company closed its’ doors in 1955, by which time fewer than 1,700 Black Shadows had been produced.

Record Breaking Vincent Black Shadow Is Top Seller At Bonhams Auction

Mon, 29 Apr 2013

A fully restored, ex-works 1952 Vincent Black Shadow was the top selling motorcycle at the Bonhams auction, held at the International Classic Motorcycle Show at the Staffordshire County Showground on Sunday, April 28, selling for £113,500 (US $176,341 after premiums). This Black Shadow was part of the factory’s bid to set a new 24-hour speed record at Montlhéry in France in May 1952. Mechanical troubles prevented that from happening, but the team still came away with eight records, including six hours at over 100 mph.
