#3221 Stephen Vincent Benet Photo of Essay
Approx. 5in x 3.5in official USPS black and white publicity photo of the artwork for this issue.

The US Postal Service creates photos of essays in various formats to publicize the designs of upcoming stamp issues. Produced in advance of a stamp's issue, these are photos of artists' models, i.e., stamp production artwork, not photos of the stamps themselves. As such, these photos differ to some degree from the stamp as issued. Design changes can result in a variety of photos of essays for a given stamp issue. Produced in limited quntities and distributed primarily to the media, the vast majority of photos of essays were destroyed after use and are no longer available to collectors.

This Black Shadow was part of the factory’s bid to set a new 24-hour speed record at Montlhéry in France in May 1952. Mechanical troubles prevented that from happening, but the team still came away with eight records, including six hours at over 100 mph.
