That was a key moment in the Austrian dirtbike specialist’s climb up the ladder to equal status with the likes of Honda and Ducati in the road racing pantheon, and showed that orange was a color to be reckoned with on-road as well as off it. Days before the start of the 2012 AMA Supercross season and Ryan Dungey’s debut on the 450 SX-F, KTM has unveiled the production version of the motocrosser featuring a new engine and chassis. The 2012 KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition is equipped with a fuel-injected 449cc four-stroke engine paired with a five-speed transmission. The new engine has a 95mm bore and a 63.4mm stroke, compared to the previous version’s 97mm x 60.8mm engine.

KTM introduced its prototype electric motorcycle earlier this week, and electric bike manufacturer Zero Motorcycles almost immediately responded by opening sales on its 2009 Zero X dirt bike (look for our review of the 2008 model next week!). But these two companies aren’t the only ones exploring the possibilities of electric-powered motorcycles. In September, Japan’s largest industrial information journal Nikkei Business Daily reported that both Honda and Yamaha have set target dates for launching their own electric-powered motorcycles.
