Sacrilege to even mess around with something as iconic as a 1975 Honda CB400F? For the most part, yes. My thought was.."What if Honda had made a European-only CB400F "R" model. What would it have looked like?
That was the direction I took with this bike. It came to me cosmetically thrashed. I cleaned it up and it looked OK (see pic). But I wanted to take it to another level. It was totally stripped to bare frame and every nut, bolt, and component on this bike was either cleaned, replaced, refurbished, rebuilt, or re-painted. The tail section is from an original '75 Ducati 750 SS that's been highly modified for the 400F. The step that the stock Ducati seat snapped to is gone, the stock Duc lines softened and refined, ears have been formed to accept the mini turn signals, an LED tail light has been frenched into it, and it was re-glassed and strengthened at all mounting points including the seat pan. It attaches at the stock rear fender mounts. I also formed small "blisters" around the stock seat hinges so that if a future owner wants to return it to stock, they can. The seat is leather with the pleats matching the width of the stripes in the paint. The front fender is a modified '81 Honda Hawk part. It has been shortened a total of seven inches, reshaped, the cable guide swapped to the correct side and it hugs the tire so nicely now. I've been doing high-end motorcycle painting and body work for forty years and the finish on this bike is gorgeous. Keeping the stock Varnish Blue was essential, but with the addition of CBX-styled stripes and pin stripes and correct Honda decals. Mechanically, nothing has been left un-touched. The engine has 13.5K miles on it and is sewing machine tight and smooth. Maybe the quietest 400F I have ever heard. It has been completely serviced with new points, plugs, valve adjustment, oil, filter, air cleaner. The carbs have been gone through and synchronized. Even after sitting for six months through the winter, just turn on the gas, the choke, hit the starter and it immediately fires up and idles at 1,100 rpm within fifteen seconds. It runs through the gears perfectly, and loves to rev. All of the cables have been replaced. The fork oil replaced, seals are in great shape. Swing arm bushings greased and serviced, also in great shape. The ignition is brand new as well as the master cylinder. The brake caliper has been rebuilt with new pads. The rear brake shoes are in perfect condition. The rear shocks are new gas-filled units. The chain and Avon Road Rider tires have less then 500 miles on them. New bar end mirrors and mini turn signals. It has a new battery. Details: All of the casting marks on the aluminum parts have been gently filed off, smoothed and polished, including every fin on the engine. The covers got the same treatment before repainting. The forks have been smoothed and polished, even the levers have been done. It's things you never really notice but wonder why it looks so finished. The chain guard was made from aluminum strap, shaped and polished and then modified to fit around the shock. With everything that has been done, I made sure that it could easily be returned. That was really important to me. Nothing has been cut away or modified beyond an easy afternoon of wrenching to turn it back to stone stock. All the stock parts that I removed will go to the new owner. Shocks and chain guard. The seat has been recovered at one time and the foam is a bit hard, but it's there. The stock front fender has a teeny-tiny ding smaller then the a BB but is otherwise perfect. The rear fender is nice, but the tail light lens is cracked. The turn signals have some rash. I also have the original mirrors. The stock header pipes are pristine, but there was a repair made on the collector by a previous owner. He had welded on a patch or two. I smoothed those out and refinished the surface to look "acceptable". The muffler is an aftermarket part and is as quiet as stock. If I were to keep this bike I would invest in a new Yoshi-style exhaust or an aftermarket stock replacement. Both about $500. I left it, though, because the header pipes are so nice, and they are original to the bike. You can't see the collector repair unless you get down on your hands and knees. To me this in the only flaw on an otherwise absolutely beautiful and unique 400F. I really don't believe this could be replicated for what I hope to receive for it. There are hundreds of hours of loving care put into this bike and they are appreciating on a daily basis, especially the 1975 models. I hate to let it go, but it needs to be ridden more often than I do. This 400F has a clean title but hasn't been licensed since 2014. No warranty, and shipping will be up to the new owner to take care of but I will help in any way I can to get it safely into your hands. I do have a PayPal account. $500 within 24 hrs. of purchase, total to be received before I let it go. Confidently know that you need to do nothing to this bike but to just get on, start the engine and enjoy for many years to come. Thank you for looking and good luck bidding. |

John McGuinness rides the electric future
Sun, 16 Jun 2013Jump onboard with John McGuinness as he heads from the start line on his Shinden Ni / Mugen electric motorcycle in the TT Zero race. One wonders whether Honda would have announced that it is actually a Honda if McGuinness had taken the win. There's certainly plenty of Honda money behind the bike.
