Harley-Davidson Sportster description

1976 HARLEY DAVIDSON XLH 1000 SPORTSTER

This Ironhead was bought at an estate auction. It is an XLH model with an electric starter and kick-starter and both work. The paint is black metallic and has a lot of metallic almost could consider it metal flake. The motor, forks and almost everything else is flat black. It has both an aftermarket tach and odometer. However neither is working and probably need new cables. It has no turn signals. The headlight hi/lo works and the brake light and running light also work. The dummy lights for the oil and generator do not work. I have tested the generator and it is working and the motor has oil pressure.  It has an oil cooler and filter hooked up. The bike has a Electric Franks solid state regulator. It still has the points. I have installed a new battery, new plugs, removed the old fuel and oil/filter. The bike fired right up and sounds good even with the drag pipes. I noticed an issue with the bike while being pushed or kick started. It would pop out of neutral and into gear sometimes. Since it had been sitting I was hoping it was a stuck clutch or shift linkage problem. Checked the clutch and it was sticking and was used up so I have installed a new clutch. However from time to time it does still pop out of neutral while being pushed.  The only other possibility is the pawl spring. The tires are in very good shape with about 75% tread life left. So while the bike has some it issues it has been on a reliability run and the motor, trans and clutch all work and sound fine.
