The debut of the twin-cylinder motorcycles was made in 1988, when Marco Lucchinelli was riding a Ducati 851 at the World Superbike Championship. It had an output of 128 hp at 11500 rpm. The 851 evolved to the 888, 916, 996, and 998, the last one with an output of 188 hp.
Compared to its predecessors, the 999 contains hundreds of improvements and innovative technological solutions, and represents a true generational leap forward.
Powered by a Testastretta Desmodromic engine, with an output of 140 hp at 9750 rpm, the 999 represents the pure sports bike: purposefully long, low, and narrow, with the ability to cheat the wind at speed. Effenbert Liberty Signs McCormick to Ride Ducati 1199 Panigale in 2012 World Superstock Championship
Mon, 12 Dec 2011Czech racing team Effenbert-Liberty has signed reigning Canadian Superbike Champion Brett McCormick to ride the new Ducati 1199 Panigale in the 2012 World Superstock 1000 FIM Cup. McCormick won the Canadian championship this season riding the BMW S1000RR, and he’ll be one of the first racers to compete on the Ducati 1199 Panigale which will make its world championship racing debut in the upcoming World Superstock season. The Panigale will be available to Superstock racers this season but won’t make its debut in the World Superbike class until 2013.
Ducati North America Sets New Monthly Sales Record
Mon, 04 Jun 2012Ducati North America set a new monthly sales record selling 1,782 motorcycles in May, easily surpassing its previous record of 1,394 units sold set in June 2008. Helping drive sales was the introduction of the new 2012 Ducati 1199 Panigale and the Streetfighter 848 last month. The two new models helped Ducati North America see a 49% year-on-year sales increase for the month.
Massimo Tamburini: 1943 – 2014
Mon, 07 Apr 2014Massimo Tamburini, creator of some of the industry’s most iconic motorcycle designs, has succumbed to lung cancer at the age of 70. Tamburini was diagnosed with the disease last November and underwent chemotherapy treatment but passed away April 6. Earning renown for designing motorcycles such as the Ducati 916 and the MV Agusta F4, Tamburini’s name will be forever linked with those two companies, as well as Cagiva and helped found Bimota (Tamburini is the “Ta” in the company’s name.)
