Up for auction is a 1936 HARLEY model VD 74twin with the rare 4-speed transmission (used in ’36 only), including lots of NOS and new motor, transmission, chassis and accessory parts. Motor, carburetor, generator and transmission are rebuilt from NOS and new parts. SEE PHOTOS. Title is in my name. I acquired this bike back in 1981 from a scrap yard in East St. Louis, IL. It had sat there for years. It was about 60% complete. Over the next 15 years or so, I collected NOS parts and accessories to rebuild and restore the bike. This is a project bike that I know I’m not going to get to. I’m just too busy. A major problem with all VL’s is wear in the wheel hubs and splines of the connecting brake drums. When worn, the wheels wiggle…no fun when riding at speed. This bike has NOS wheel hubs and brake drums with splines. Also the drum internals are NOS with new bearings and felt seals included. SEE PHOTOS The motor is completely rebuilt with NOS and quality new parts. NOS connecting rod set, rear cyl. valves and springs, and a NOS oil pump are some of the highlights. SEE PHOTOS Transmission has some NOS gears, NOS brass seals, new bearings, new high gear bushing, etc. SEE PHOTOS Carburetor rebuilt with new parts. Motor, transmission, and carburetor are correctly detailed with new nuts, screws, etc. Also correctly painted and plated, cad. and dull nickel. Generator rebuilt by Dale Cashman, see his ad in AMCA magazine. All machine work and assembly was done by me in my shop in St. Louis. This is a project bike. Chassis needs to be restored. Gas tanks are solid with galvanizing still visible inside, no rust. Paint on left tank is original, left on for reference. Fork and frame appear straight. Fenders will need body work to work the dents out but are very solid with no rust issues. Almost all nuts, bolts and washers are NOS or new Colony. They are correct for the application. New Coker tires with tubes. Overall, the bike is very correct for its year and model. It would be very difficult if not impossible to find all the NOS parts and accessories at this late date. These parts just don’t come up for sale anymore. With a good restoration to the chassis, this bike will run, handle and can look like new. 1936 HARLEYS had some of the most beautiful color options ever offered. With the 4-Speed transmission it can be shifted quickly. You can expect performance on par with any later HARLEY UL, but you will have the prestige of owning and riding a much rarer and more interesting bike. These bikes are a lot of fun to ride. When was the last time you have seen a 1936 VL with a 4-speed? I can deliver the bike to the Davenport, Iowa meet. Questions?
