Offered here is a 1970 BSA B44 VICTOR SPECIAL 441cc Square Barrel Scrambler, MOSTLY ORIGINAL and in VERY GOOD RUNNING condition. Matching frame & engine number B44VS XD04109, stored by Previous Owner for many years, last registered and run in 2003 (up until this past weekend, that is), P.O. did the Shooting Star fiberglass tank conversion and invested in a pretty nice paint job, sadly for him the fiberglass tank leaked (now THERE's a surprise!) and damaged the paint on the left side of the tank. I pulled it out of my storage over the weekend and decided to get it running - a quick compression test shot the needle right up over 150lbs, points & wiring checked out good, with a new N4, loaner battery from my T100R and some fresh gas she fired up! Sounds great, has a nice snarl on the throttle, idles smoothly, NO unusual engine noises above the BSA unit single valve train symphony. A test ride around the block felt good, NO issues up through the gears & back, clutch, brakes, suspension all good, oil returning to the tank vigorously... Not saying this bike is quite ready to enter in the Jack Pine Enduro without a little more attention to detail, but it's definitely a good solid runner!
Cosmetically the bike does have some challenges, mostly in terms of flawed chrome - the original Jones wheel rims have some pitting and rust spots, same for both fenders and the headlight shell but on the upside the characteristic Victor Special muffler & heat shield are bright & shiny, like new! The engine is beautiful - NO bent or broken fins, NO cracks or nasty gouges, NO weld repairs, the crankcases do not look like they have ever been apart. The frame is straight and intact with all lugs, tabs & brackets right where they should be, original factory folding footpegs, forks are straight, seals not leaking, nice fresh rubber gaiters with NO cracks or tears. Front brake works well but as shown in the photos the alloy brake plate has a chunk missing on the front edge. Good rubber front & rear - "correct" Dunlop K70 on the back, ribbed Taiwan on the front. Correct Lucas MCH66 5" headlight, Smiths gray face speedometer shows only 240.7 miles, most likely a replacement, chainguard and compression release cable & lever are missing...
Saving the best for last, check out the last set of pics to see my solution for the leaky fiberglass tank - an absolutely gorgeous original Victor Special alloy tank, still with the factory yellow and paint and NOT A SINGLE DENT ANYWHERE!!! Just repaint the oil tank & sidecover black to reclaim the factory original Victor Special look...
All in all, this is a very solid & straight 441 Victor Special - with a little more fettling it would make an awesome lightweight scrambler, enduro mount or thumping cafe racer! Sold with clean CALIFORNIA TITLE in previous owner's name. ***California bidders be advised - previous owner in question did not stay current with DMV, so be prepared to pay the usual king's ransom in back fees & penalties if you want a CA tag***
