For sale is my 1972 Yamaha DS7 with an RD350 engine. This project has been a labor of love for several years. I am 57 years old and an enthusiast and I love building as much as riding. It's simply time for a new project. All work, including paint, was completed by me with the exception of crank bearings and bore/hone. As a qualifier, I won MotoGP tickets in a Yamaha USA contest with this bike and First Place Yamaha Restoration for another project at the largest west coast two-stroke event in 2011. The story: Purchased as a runner in rough condition, I began the project with a complete disassemble and cleaning. Then:
- Sandblasted and painted frame and brackets with PJ1 gloss black
- Replaced forks with “Forks by Frank” units – they are perfect.
- Replaced swing arm bushings with brass units.
- Progressive Suspension rear shocks
- “Gunfighter” seat cushion and cover from Nebraska (no Viet Nam)
- Like new seat pan and hinges
- Light weight and sealed battery
- Wiring harness is 100% original and clean with no cuts or mods.
- Polished fork lowers
- Polished brake covers
- Painted fenders and taillight bracket silver with clear-coat
- Polished upper triple tree
- New steering bearings (stock)
- Beautiful original chrome speedo and tach
- Moto-Carrera rear sets
- HJC Billet kick start lever
- Modified rear peg brackets to fit Spec II Chambers
- 530 Chain and sprockets conversion
- Filled then painted tank and side covers, headlight and brackets “Fire Red”
- Oil tank received a new sight glass
o Tank has been internally coated and given me no problems for two years. It was done correctly
- Engine: RD350 cases and six speed transmission, shifts perfectly
- Cluth is tight and no slipage
- Top end is second over with ports cleaned up and original port timing
- Heads machined to reduce ridiculous RD350 squish, otherwise stock
- Crankshaft received new bearings and true
- All engine parts repainted and fins polished
- RZ intake manifolds with crossover
- VM 28 Mikuni’s with Dave F. conversion
- Two into One intake manifold with UNI foam air filter
- YZ 125 reeds
- Classic Spec II chambers, not a dent
- Vintage Smoke pointless ignition (love no points)
- Exhaust port to manifold match
- Bridgestone BT-45’s with about 2,000 easy, but fun, street miles
- Custom rear stand is included in sale (make sure your shipper will take it)
The bike is reliable and comfortable. I have taken her for 100 plus mile rides within the last two months. The engine is jetted to take advantage of the mid-range and runs clean through the entire rev range. I do not abuse or race (57 years old now) and this accounts for the fact that there is no piston slap! As you can see by the pictures it is stunning. The decals in the clear coat are perfect and don’t even rise in the reflection.
The problems:
- Right fork seal weeps .
- The tack is not reliable above 6,000 rpm (the needle jumps around despite a new cable)
That's it. It’s impossible to have covered everything (check the polished control levers). Please ask questions before bidding. I would prefer a local sale and pick-up so I reserve the right to cancel the sale in the event of a local purchase.
Shipping is the complete responsibility of the purchaser. I will make sure the bike is ready to ship by draining fluids.
Please ask questions and consider your actions before bidding. I will respond to questions within 24 hours until the last 24 hours of the auction when I can not guarantee a response.
