In 1980 BMW began an unlikely association with the Paris-Dakar rally.The rally was dominated by uncommon machines.The average dirt bike of the time couldn't even hold up to the demands of the sahara.Stone cold reliability and range is what was needed.To achieve this they strengthened frames,extended swingarms,took the best forks and brakes off a ktm and then finished then off with large fuel tanks.They then rode these beasts to win after win.
The Paris-Dakar model got heated grips, the solo seat and extended rack, 9.5 gallon tank, bash plates, chin spoiler, and the frame-mounted instrument pod (speedo, tach, and clock) and fairing.
