1989 BMW K1

For your consideration, we have this fantastic museum-quality timecapsule in the form of a 1989 BMW K1.

If you ever wanted to ride BMW’s vision of the future in the 80’s, now is your chance. This one is by far the cleanest one you’ll ever see with only 2,144 miles on the odometer. Yes…..just over 2 thousand miles since 1989, less than 80 miles per year! 

100hp never felt so good! Made to travel the autobahns at over 150 mph in comfort, this bike is a stunning example of what technology of the time could do for motorcycling. The style and performance of this machine changed they way everyone looked at BMW from then on.  With less than 7,000 units every produced, all of K1’s are rare, but one in this condition is beyond rare. 

This really is a like NEW motorcycle that still has the original tires on it! We purchased this bike out of Florida a few years ago where it was sitting in a garage with the rest of a motorcycle collector’s machines for many years. We took the time to get it running again with great care. We disassembled the fuel system and replaced the filters, professionally cleaned the injectors and completely flushed everything. We also spent the $500 to buy a new OEM brake master cylinder and do a complete brake flush. (The ABS still works great!)

With a new battery and serviced system this bike has been running for over a year and never fails to start. We also rebuilt the front suspension as it was leaking and totally in need of love.

We chose to leave the factory tires that are hard as hell simply because the bike is so perfect that it seems like it would be most appreciated by a museum or collector. Maintaining its originality seemed to make the most sense.

Perhaps you’re a buyer that would rather put a few thousand miles on this time capsule? For an extra charge, we will gladly put new tires on it before shipping it out so that it’s ready for the road when it gets to you.

The photos really tell the rest of the story. The bike is nearly perfect with nary a rock chip, but there are two minor exceptions: 

- the bar-ends have peeling paint. My guess is that the factory paint wasn’t sealed correctly, but they would definitely be simple and easy to remove and refurb. 

- as a known factory issue, a few of the plastic mounting points of the fairing are cracked, but still quite servicable. (the issues can clearly be seen in the photos as well)
