Wow, I rode this 1983 XR1000 and it was unbelievable. I mean it was just too much fun. How often do you remember anyone saying that about a Harley of any type (other then a Buell..which is not really a Harley)? The bike is heavy, it is still a Harley, but for a 1983 motorcycle on worn out tires it was a blast.
The bike was sort of a mixture of Sportster and XR-750 the factory dreamed up in the middle of the AMF nightmare of ownership. Though based on the stripped-down XLX Sportster, the XR-1000 was fitted with special cylinder heads similar to those found on the racing version XR-750. These had intake ports entering the rear of both cylinders fed by dual carburetors on the right-hand side, and front-exiting exhaust ports emptying into high-mounted dual mufflers that exited on the left. The modifications resulted in an output of nearly 70HP, a figure only dreamed of for other Sportsters, and gave the XR-1000 acceleration unequaled by any other street motorcycle Harley had ever built.
Ok, that was the technical stuff. What about this particular bike? Well, somewhere along the way, the bike was treated to a full on Kosman do over that included Spoked Wheels (just pick up the stock wheels and rotors) for reduced Gyroscopic effect, cast iron Brake Rotors, a set of Ceriani Front Fork Legs and Progressive Rear Shocks in the back. A set of Super Trap Headers were installed and what was at the time the hot set up, a set of Metzler tires spooned on.
Holy smokes, what a transformation. This thing is a blast to ride. It has the best brakes I have ever used on an air-cooled Harley even if they do take a huge effort to use. Even though I did not push the bike hard, I could tell it handled better then almost any other twin of that vintage (within reason…). The engine pulled strong, sounded good, shifted well and basically surprised me. The whole bike surprised me. I love it.
Now the other side of the coin. The person that owns the motorcycle is what I would call mechanically sensitive and cosmetically indifferent. It starts and runs well, handles great, all of the parts are here, but it deserves a complete going through cosmetically. There are oil spots under the bike after it has been ridden from the back of the engine area. It looks good at a distance, but the battery tray, which is welded to the oil tank, broke loose last year and emptied most of the oil on the rear tire as it was headed down the driveway. The left side got scrapped up a bit and the tank got a dent in it. The oil tank is fixed and everything works, but the signs are still there. The forks are seeping a bit and need seals. The back brake rotor is not properly aligned and is brushing against the Caliper. The blinkers did not blink. There is a cover on the head light shield that is missing. The gas cap took a powder and it turns out a Honda car gas cap has the same threads. Classic! The tires are in need of replacement. You can drive the bike now, but it would be so much better if it had some love poured on to it (besides increasing the value exponentially). The stock forks, wheels, brake rotors and mufflers are included with the bike, but keep them in a box somewhere, the bike is so good the way it is. Also included is the stock Seat and a Corbin Custom version made before Corbin lost it’s way.
But oh boy, what a joy to ride!
