At the heart of the D16RR is a compact 989cc V-Four engine inside a version of Ducati's trademark tubular-steel trellis frame. The engine uses the same bore and stroke as that used in the 2006 race bike the D16GP6. It uses the "twin pulse" firing order in which the crankpins are offset by 70 degrees to generate what Ducati terms as "soft pulse timing."

Equipped with the race ECU and exhaust system the D16RR achieves 180HP at 13800 rpm at the rear wheel.
