BMW R-Series description

1986 BMW R100RS Sport Custom, Yellow-Black. Frame and body canary yellow with satin black highlights; VERY SHARP and SPORTY. Dual Plugs, big valve heads, 336 Sport Cam, Koni Monoshock, EBC Floating Discs, fresh 10K Service. Numerous custom touches.

There are less than 3700 miles on this Sporty BMW R100RS since the Custom Sport rebuild. It has a BMW Factory 336 Sport cam, Dual Plugs, big valve heads, and 40mm Carbs. The brakes have been upgraded with EBC Floating Rotors, and braided stainless brake lines for much more positive braking. The very rare Koni rear Monoshock gives a superlative ride with precise control. The exhaust system is stainless steel, for long life. Tires are excellent, the battery is new.

The moderate and dependable sport motor build gives you GREAT throttle response and eliminates the need to downshift in most passing situations. The motor will pull top gear well into redline, without excessive vibration. The combination of the later Nykasil 1000cc cylinders (known for long life), matched with the late ’70 big valve heads and the big 40mm Bing carbs, give you a great top end (nearly double the speed limit). The 336 Sport Cam adds in a very torque filled midrange and progressively more horsepower as you run the RPM up. You get all this without sacrificing a reasonable mileage range of between 35 MPG when blasting it full throttle, and 47 MPG when cruising at legal speeds. This bike is seriously fun to ride!

The R100RS BMW was the first motorcycle ever built with a wind tunnel designed fairing. The riding position is “Euro Sport”; a relaxed slight forward lean without the much more cramped and radical American Sportbike riding position. The fairing fully protects the rider from wind and rain, except for the rider’s toes.! Additionally, the fairing design makes the bike much more stable at higher speeds than a naked bike or a bike with a touring fairing.

Due to the time since the initial build, we performed a full 10K Service. We found noticeable wear on the steering neck bearings (too easy to lift the wheel under power), so we installed new ones again. The bike was ridden for about a year after the initial build, and then was garaged for several years, so we rebuilt the carbs too, and cleaned out and relined the fuel tank with POR15 (the best fuel tank liner we have found).

This beautiful bike is very striking, and will draw interest wherever you park it. The bright yellow paint can be seen by other drivers much further than most BMW paint jobs. The bold graphics accentuate the lines and let people know that this is not your father’s BMW!

Fri, 03 May 2013

Motorsports legend John Surtees will lead a parade of classic cars and motorcycles – including Surtees’ 1960 500cc Grand Prix Championship-winning MV Agusta – in his home town of Edenbridge, England. Surtees is the only person to have ever won world championships in both Grand Prix motorcycle racing and Formula One, and the parade will feature cars and bikes from his time as both a racer and a racing team owner. Surtees himself will drive the Team Surtees TS7, a F1 car constructed by his own team that debuted at the 1970 British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch.
