Up for bidding is a 1973 BMW R60 / 5 motorcycle.  This motorcycle was from an estate, found in the back of the garage covered by a mountain of bankets.  Apparently, the bike was running well when last driven, sometime about 3-4 years ago.  There is no battery, so we haven't tried to start it.  The wheels roll freely, engine isn't frozen or anything, seems to have compression when kicking, there are no drips/leaks, tires are decent and hold air well, it does come with the keys.  The title was issued to the owner in 1980, and he had it ever since.   That's 36 years with the same owner, a buyers dream.  The odometer reads 97671, and the BMW dealer sticker from the last oil change, on the inside rear fender,  reads 97409.  So, I believe the mileage is probably accurate, and there's no reason to think that the bike wouldn't still run fine.  I can see that the right side cover is missing, but otherwise this bike looks to be pretty complete.  It even has the original tool kit and users manual under the seat. All of the lights/lens are good, except for the tail light lens which has been slightly broken.  The seat is in great shape, with no rips or tears.  I took a lot of pictures, so that you'd get a good idea of the bikes overall condition. If you're looking at this bike, you know how rare these "Toasters" are becoming, as they only made them for a couple of years.  I am listing the bike with a very reasonable starting price, well below current NADA blue book values for this model, and the high bidder will get to take this home.   Looking at part prices for this bike, I would guess that one could even just part it out and make a tidy profit.  In my opinion, this is not by any means just a parts bike.  This should be given some tlc and ridden!!  This is a NO RESERVE auction.  I have 100% LIFETIME feedback as a seller, so no worries here.   Please ask any questions BEFORE bidding, and please don't bid if you haven't already got the money to complete the sale.  I will be glad to assist any shipper, if one is used.

BACKSTORY I have here one R75/5 SWB classic with matching engine, frame, and badge numbers; it has a model year of 1973 and a build date of 1/1972, so the wiring is fuseless and most of the parts are stamped 1971. I got it as a basket case in the Spring and spent an unreasonable amount of time this Summer reviving and refinishing various components and making a few reversible (non-destructive) modifications. PO replaced the head & base gaskets, pushrod tube seals, etc., got it fired up then lost interest.  REVIVAL (I would not call it a "restoration") I stripped & painted the frame and swingarm (spray lacquer; 3 coats black, 3 coats clear) and polished most of the engine casings. All the knurled BMW casing bolts looked great, but much of the other original hardware (hardened nuts & bolts, bushings, motor mounts, brake linkage, seat latch, steering damper, etc.) had a "lovely patina" (ahem), so I de-plated and re-plated all (zinc; 2 to 4 strikes).

Question of the Day: Single-sided or Double-Sided Swingarms

Tue, 06 Aug 2024

The classic form versus function debate A couple of weeks ago, Ducati pulled the covers off its seventh-generation superbike, the 2025 Panigale V4 and V4 S. The new Panigale introduced a number of changes to the engine, chassis and electronics, aimed at pushing the performance envelope even further. There was one particular change that we knew was going to be polarizing: the change from a single-sided swingarm to a double-sided swingarm.

The 390 Adventure Project Upgrades and Adjustments

Wed, 10 Jul 2024

Following in the wake of the Biltwell 100 race, my confidence in the 390 Adventure and my ability to pilot it for long stretches off-road soared. The ability to combine the technical skills I learned in the ATX Moto Adventuresand Sedlak Off Road classes, along with some good old-fashioned seat time, really paid off. In addition, there were two changes I made to the bike that firmly cemented my trust in piloting it through the sketchy sandy trails a custom lowered seat from Seat Concepts, and some aggressive knobby tires.

MV Agusta Chairman Hubert Trunkenpolz Interview Part One

Wed, 26 Jun 2024

Back in the Black Photos by Fabio Polimeni In November 2022 Italian trophy brand MV Agusta, wholly owned since 2019 by Russian entrepreneur Timur Sardarov and his family, and Pierer Mobility AG KTMs parent company reached an agreement on future strategic cooperation, as a result of which the Austrian firm headed by Stefan Pierer would acquire a 25.10% stake in MV Agusta via its KTM AG subsidiary. At the first meeting of the newly constituted MV Agusta board on November 15, a capital increase of 30 million was agreed, denoting the sum KTM had paid to acquire its new minority shareholding in the company. As part of this strategic alliance KTM took charge of purchasing all components needed to manufacture MV Agustas entire range of models, as well as responsibility for marketing, distribution and after-sales service for MV Agusta on a global basis outside Italy.
