BMW R-Series description

1978 BMW R100RS European Model. You are looking at a very desirable Classic BMW in absolutely outstanding condition.

The odometer is in Kilometers as this motorcycle was brought directly from Europe by a serviceman (not the US model but the Euro model) so it doesn't get more European than this. The mileage is approximately 41,725 Miles as the odometer reads 67,150 km. Odometer slowly increasing as I drive it around the block to keep it up. Has matching frame and engine numbers.

Has recent high quality paint job in the original BMW Gold Metallic of the year. The bike is not perfect but has no dents or scratches other than minor. The bike is indeed in showroom condition but is not a complete 100% original frame-up restoration. The bike is a daily driver in exceptional condition and not a trailer queen. Has no indication whatsoever of being crashed or left out in the sun but rather garaged and covered in a consistent manner.  I have over 80 detailed pictures and videos; please ask for the link.

It has Koni shocks, Odyssey battery, Krauser panniers, good tires, new front brakes including master cylinder, caliper seals and pads, complete set of stainless steel braided brake lines, updated charging system including a new solid mounted diode board, voltage regulator and electronic ignition, reproduction stainless mufflers, carburetors rebuilt and balanced as well as recent fuel hoses, gas tank looks very good inside and out; no dents, no rust around the petcocks, etc. The top end has been gone through about 10K ago by a competent BMW mechanic (torque and power is strong and even). Starts, shifts, and drives very good. I don’t have documentation of the repairs/upgrades but 1) information comes from previous owner and is deemed as knowledgeable and reliable source and 2) I have owned and worked on airheads since 1985 and there is no doubt in my mind, from what I see and by driving it, that all described above per previous owner, is correct. I have not disassembled the engine or components to verify what cannot be seen otherwise. The bike can be inspected in Sarasota, FL upon request.

The rear brake works but you won’t skid the rear tire. I have new pads and pistons that go with the bike. The seat has the well-known second post modification allowing the seat to be removed vertically (you don’t have to remove the right pannier just to open the seat, works great). Comes with the seat brackets should you want to bring it back to stock. The neutral indicator light in the instrument panel sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I'll check for a lose wire connection.  Has very competent small fiberglass reinforcement performed on the inside of the fairing where is common to get stress hairline cracks over time; hard to spot but shown on pictures. Panniers are sound but two of the locks are getting a bit tired. Previous owner added a stretchable band as precaution to prevent them from opening as it sometimes happens on these bikes. I ride the bike and have no hesitation with the panniers or with anything about the bike for that matter. I feel confident to ride this airhead anywhere. Structurally sound, mechanically reliable, cosmetically gorgeous.

Extras: The front fender shown is the better larger one but I have the original one also painted to match. I have an extra set of Krauser panniers that could be used for parts (i.e. lock or two). I’ll consider giving the extras with the sale based on offer and negotiation. The extra panniers alone in this condition are worth about $350 and the fender, well, haven’t priced it yet but hard to find. My intention and preference would be to send them with the bike. Make me a reasonable offer and is all yours.

Bid with confidence. I have been a BMW airhead enthusiast for almost 30 years and love to buy, fix, and ride them.  I only list very few select handpicked airheads as I appreciate and favor quality over quantity. This one is about the nicest one I've had. I have clean Florida title in hand. A $500.00 USD deposit is required within 24 hrs of auction end via PayPal. Balance in cash within 7 days of auction end. Bike to be picked up within 7 days of auction end as well. I could hold inside garage and covered for a few days more after is paid if needed. Shipping is responsibility of buyer but I can assist.

BMW Helps Vertically Challenged

Tue, 02 Dec 2008

No matter where they go or what they do, it seems that people who are vertically challenged always get the ‘short’ end of the stick, pardon the pun. Historically, if a pint-sized person wanted to get into the hobby of motorcycling, their choices were limited to bikes like the Suzuki Marauder, Ninja 250 or HD Sportster (the thought alone makes my back hurt.) BMW Motorrad now has good news for riders who either need or simply prefer a lower seat height, but do not want to compromise on model choice. BMW is the first motorcycle manufacturer to launch a range of models that can be ordered from the factory with lowered suspension – to provide customers with low seat height options.

Von Kuenheim: BMW Must Start Winning in WSBK Before Entering MotoGP

Fri, 16 Mar 2012

MotoGP racing may be the next logical step for BMW, says Hendrik von Kuenheim, general director of BMW Motorrad. Von Kuenheim was speaking at a press launch for the BMW C600 Sport and C650GT scooters but took a moment to discuss racing with MotoGP.com. Such speculation about BMW entering Grand Prix racing may sometimes be dismissed as idle musings, but the fact the interview was with MotoGP’s official website holds some significance.

WSBK: 2012 Brno Results

Mon, 23 Jul 2012

Marco Melandri bit a chunk off of Max Biaggi‘s World Superbike championship points lead by taking a pair of wins at Brno. The double was the first in Melandri’s career and the first for BMW. Biaggi, who arrived in the Czech Republic with four wins and nine podium finishes in ten previous races at Brno, was held off the podium this year, shrinking his lead in the championship to 21 points from 48.
