Powerful, refined, and high revving. The R 1200 GS is powered by a new opposed twin engine design delivering 125 hp. Based on a new concept of combined air and liquid cooling and vertical flows through the cylinders, the engine operates efficiently, reliably, and with high torques at all times. Further improvements like the new wet clutch with antihopping feature, the electromotive throttle actuator E-Gas, and the optional riding modes make the opposed twin engine the perfect drive solution at the heart of the new R 1200 GS.

The new R 1200 GS is ready for any terrain, thanks to the greater rigidity of its main frame and its enhanced Paralever and Telelever for even greater enduro steering accuracy. The optional Dynamic ESA configures the suspension automatically to the terrain and load conditions. BMW R12 Trademark May Be for an R NineT Successor

BMW Motorrad to mark 100th anniversary in 2023 Earlier this year, reports emerged that BMW had filed trademark applications for “R12”, with many predicting the name would be used on a new cruiser. The logic made sense, as the naming structure was similar to the R18, and BMW lacked a cruiser model in the 1200-ish range. We were a little less bullish on that theory at the time, and we suspected there was more to the story.

BMW posted another record quarter, reporting sales of 37,471 motorcycles in the three months ended June 30, 2011. First quarter unit sales were 3.6% higher than the 36,175 motorcycles sold in the same quarter of 2010. Combined with a record first quarter, BMW has sold 60,580 units in the first half of the year, a 6.3% increase over 2010.
