Öhlins-Equipped Special Edition 2014 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-14R Announced
Mon, 09 Sep 2013A few days ago, Kawasaki revealed several 2014 models including a new Ninja 1000 updated with ABS, traction control, multiple ride modes, monobloc calipers and optional luggage. Among the model announcements was the 2014 Ninja ZX-14R with three new color options: Golden Blazed Green and Metallic Spark Black, Candy Burnt Orange and Metallic Spark Black, and Flat Ebony and Ebony.
But that’s not all Kawasaki had for its 1441cc behemoth. For some markets, Kawasaki is offering a special edition version with Öhlins suspension replacing the base model’s Showa components.
The special edition model gets a new TTX rear shock jointly developed by Öhlins and Kawasaki. It uses a twin-tube construction to reducing weight and making it more compact. According to Kawasaki, the TTX shock requires lower-tension seals than a standard shock, reducing friction loss. Kawasaki also claims improved rear stability, feedback and bump absorption. Compression and rebound damping can be adjusted without affecting each other while a remote adjuster makes it easy to tune the preload. The Öhlins fork also offers preload adjustment.
The suspension isn’t the only change from the base model. The special edition also gets a grippier dimpled seat and black rings around the tachometer and speedometer replacing regular ZX-14R’s stainless steel rings. European customers will also a performance kit of Akrapovich slip-ons, a bubble screen and other upgrades.
And of course, there’s the special edition colors and graphics. The special edition Ninja ZX-14R will be available in green and black or white and black with green fins or white and black with gold flames and gold wheels.
Kawasaki hasn’t yet announced pricing or availability for the Öhlins-equipped special edition Ninja ZX-14R. We’ll have to wait to see if it’ll be offered here in North America.
