Before the 31 degree banking grew out of the ground at Daytona the 200 mile race was competed on the beach.

Modern racing around the oval road circuit is exciting now with the racers four abreast on the intimidating banking, but you have to be impressed with the resiliance of these post-war riders. Hauling Harley Davidsons across sand and the instance that they return to their feet after crashing.
