Official Triumph Owner's Manual Confirms Speed Twin and Scrambler Name Changes

Back in early May, MO broke the news that Triumph is giving the Street Twin and Street Scrambler models new names for 2023, renaming them the Speed Twin 900 and Scrambler 900, respectively. We have now uncovered further evidence of the name changes, plus confirmation that the models are otherwise identical to the 2022 versions.

The new evidence comes from Triumph itself, as the manufacturer has added the manuals for its 2023 Modern Classics models to its online Owner Handbook Library. The 2023 handbook officially refers to the Speed Twin 900 and Scrambler 900 by name. The even Owner Handbook Library also provided the first official photo of the 2023 Triumph Scrambler 900, shown at top, confirming at least one color option plus the updated side panel bearing the new name. The owner manual also confirms that the model currently known as the Speed Twin will also be renamed the Speed Twin 1200.

We previously reported that the renamed models would be otherwise identical to their 2022 counterparts, and the manual confirms this. The specifications for the renamed 2023 models are identical to the corresponding 2022 models.

As we previously reported, the new names creates a more streamlined nomenclature, drawing a direct line between the 900 and 1200 Scramblers and Speed Twins. It also follows a pattern Triumph previously established with its Tiger 900 and Tiger 1200 models.

While the Street Twin and Street Scrambler are getting new names, the Street Triple appears to be sticking with its current nomenclature, at least for one more year. Triumph has also released the manual for the 2023 Street Triple range, confirming the names are unchanged.

The name change also frees up the Street Scrambler and Street Twin names for future use. Triumph previously announced a partnership with Bajaj to produce middleweight models. It’s possible the Street Twin and Street Scrambler names may return for new models in this mid-capacity range between 400 and 700 cc.

But that’s getting ahead of ourselves. With only the name plates changing, full production on the renamed 2023 Modern Classics are likely already well underway. An official announcement on the Speed Twin 900, Speed Twin 1200, and Scrambler 900 may come any day now.

UPDATE June 29, 2022: A 2023 Triumph Speed Twin 900 has appeared on a German dealer’s listings on EBay. The listing shows a clear look at the updated side plate and a new matte silver color. An official announcement could come any day now.
