Latus Racing to Enter AMA Pro Flat Track with Bonneville Performance
Thu, 07 Mar 2013Latus Motors Racing announced it is returning to AMA Pro Flat Track competition, working with the Bonneville Performance team with Triumph-powered machines. Last season, the Bonneville Performance team entered the first Triumph AMA Pro Flat Track team in 30 years.
Johnny Lewis will ride Latus Motors Racing’s Castrol Triumph bike while Mikey Martin will ride the Bonneville Performance United States Marine Corps 2nd Battalion 4th Marines Triumph. Brothers Bill, Jim and Steve Gately will manage the family-owned Bonneville Performance team while former AMA Grand National Champion Joe Kopp will manage the Latus Motors entry.
“Latus Motors has been active with AMA Pro Flat Track racing and Joe Kopp for years, and we’re really excited to be back in the field,” says George Latus, owner of Latus Motors Racing. “Bill, his brothers and the Bonneville Performance team have developed an impressive package. We’re looking forward to seeing how Johnny and Joe do at the races.”
The Bonneville Performance uses a racer with its own frame around a 995cc Triumph parallel-Twin engine with a 270-degree crank instead of the Triumph Bonneville’s 360-degree crank.
“My brothers and I come from a Triumph flat track family, so it was only natural to build a Bonneville-based flat track team,” says Bill Gately of Bonneville Performance. “We’ve come a long way since we started building our engine and chassis from the ground up.
“We are also excited that George is running our bike for his program. This is a special time for our team. With George Latus and Joe Kopp campaigning the Triumphs with us we have just gained another 40+ years of Grand National flat track experience.”
