KTM RC8R: The first month
Thu, 24 May 2012First impressions are everything so the gearbox niggles on the first RC8s meant I didn’t become an instant fan. There was never a problem for normal road riding but when the pace was increased on track days false neutrals were found and gears were missed. Ironically I might have been able to help here as KTM signed me up for pre-production shakedown testing before I got sidelined with appendicitis.
Thankfully these issues are long gone so this time round I’m getting quite loved up with my first ever long term big twin sports bike. The RC8R is lighter, more powerful, more adjustable (riding position and suspension) and has better brakes than the standard RC8 making it a great all rounder for the road or track. The riding position adjustability means you can be comfortable on long journeys (can’t wait for the ex racers tour of Scotland in August) or in a few minutes you can swap back to a circuit riding setting.
I like its huge wheelie-inducing low down torque although it also has a free revving top end unlike some other twins and triples. I’d describe it as a sports motocrosser, if there ever could be such a thing. And the recent heavenly weather means I’ve been finding every excuse to get out and ride. Track days, bike meets or even fetching a paper at the moment has been a joy.
At first the bright white and orange seemed a bit ‘in your face’ but it is definitely growing on me. I noticed a Red Bull rep at the Bassetts Pole Tuesday meet and that did look the Mutts. Some new Avon 3D Ultra Supersports came calling and after nine hundred miles I have to say all is well. Even after a thrashing at Silverstone the grip and wear is still good so I’ll keep you posted.
