Gary Nixon: 1941 – 2011

Motorcycle racing hero, Gary Nixon, died August 5, 2011 while recovering from heart surgery.

Motorcycle racing legend, Gary Nixon, died today while in intensive care for a heart attack.

According to RoadRacingWorld.com Nixon was admitted to the hospital July 29th for chest pains and later suffered a heart attack that same evening. While in recovery from procedures, Nixon passed this morning (Aug. 5th).

A two-time AMA Grand National Champion (1967 – ’68), Nixon was an accomplished flattrack and road racer. He was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1998.

Nixon’s no-nonsense racing style was offset by his irreverent sense of humor and warm personality. A true legend in his own time, ol’ #9 was a racer and personality that gives credence to the saying: They don’t make ‘em like that anymore.
