A management presentation prepared by Pierer Mobility reveals a roadmap to future KTM models including a five-bike 490 platform and 890 versions of the Adventure, SMC and Enduro R.

The presentation, produced for investors, confirms five 490 models expected to be powered by a new Twin-cylinder engine. These are expected to include a 490 Duke, a 490 Adventure, an RC490, a 490 SMC R and a 490 Enduro R. KTM President Stefan Pierer has openly discussed the new 500cc-class Twin which is being developed in India with Bajaj (which owns 49% of Pierer Mobility). Speaking with CycleNews, Pierer says 500cc bikes will be the future premium class in emerging markets while still having appeal in European markets with an A2 license class.

The 490 class will not replace the existing single-cylinder 390 models, as the product portfolio slide confirms they will remain along with the smaller 125 and 250 versions. We may actually see the 390 lineup grow as the slide suggests SMC R and Enduro R versions are also in the works.

As for the larger bikes, the presentation hints at more Twin-cylinder 890 models to follow the 890 Duke R introduced at EICMA. These include new Adventure, SMC and Enduro variants, which will not replace but supplement the existing 790 and 690 versions.

The off-road lineup looks pretty similar to KTM’s existing lineup except for the addition of more powerful versions the SX-E5 youth electric dirt bike, offering a range of models for kids from ages 3 to 14.

The presentation does not provide any timeline on when any of these new models will be released. The 890 Duke R was already introduced last month, so its siblings will probably be appearing in the next year or two. The 490 models are also expected to arrive next year, so we expect Intermot and EICMA will be very busy for KTM in 2020.

KTM is going all out (to become the 3rd largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world).

Bajaj is the 3rd largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world (behind Honda and Hero). KTM isn't even in the running.

  • Sayyed Bashir on Dec 21, 2019

Bajaj and Hero make tons of small cheap bikes for the Indian market but no one else in the world has heard of them. The major motorcycle manufacturers of the world are the Japanese Big Four, the European brands (BMW, KTM, Ducati, Triumph, Aprilia, Moto Guzzi), and Harley Davidson. KTM is the largest motorcycle manufacturer in Europe and plans to become the third largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world.

  • Jason on Dec 21, 2019

The world doesn't revolve around the USA and Europe. The population of India is larger than the USA and Europe combined. North America and Europe combined buy less than 5% of the world's motorcycles

KTM is the largest motorcycle manufacturer in Europe but have no hope of becoming number 3 in the world. They have a bunch of Chinese brands you don't know exist to pass to even get close.

  • Sayyed Bashir on Dec 22, 2019

Again with the numbers. Numbers don't mean a thing. There are billions of ants in the world but does anyone care? They are still scared of lions, tigers, bears and wolves, not ants. Ask anyone outside of India who Bajaj and Hero are and you will get a blank stare. It has nothing to do with the U.S. or Europe. Who is racing bikes in MotoGP and WSBK? The manufacturers I mentioned above. Among those, KTM will become third largest. No one cares about the rest.

  • Denchung on Dec 22, 2019

    I think KTM cares.

  • Jason on Dec 22, 2019

Words have meanings. The 3rd largest in the world means just that. It doesn't mean the 3rd largest in countries that Sayyed cares about.

  • Sayyed Bashir on Dec 23, 2019

Small bikes don't count. Most large manufacturers don't even bother with any street bikes below 400cc. You do like to argue a point to death, don't you?

  • Jason on Dec 23, 2019

So countries outside of the USA and Europe aren't part of the world and small motorcycles aren't motorcycles. Got it.

    Dictionary according to Sayyed.

  • Sayyed Bashir on Dec 24, 2019

The manufacturers I mentioned are well recognized around the world. The manufacturers you mentioned are barely known outside their own countries. It has nothing to do with my definition.

  • Jason on Dec 27, 2019

The 3rd largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world is by definition the company that sells the 3rd highest number of motorcycles worldwide.

    1 - Honda
    2 - Hero
    3 - Bajaj

If you aren't selling bikes by the million you aren't in the running.

Yup. Bajaj "only" sold 1.24 million bikes in the month of December. How many did KTM sell?

Most European manufacturers (including Ducati) need to learn what Loctite is.

    • Jon Jones on Dec 22, 2019

Indeed, Sayyed. I've seen a number of KTM rear hubs destroyed from sprocket bolts coming loose. Others use threadlock and self-locking nuts on these highly-stressed fasteners. KTM does not for some inexplicable reason.

Seemed every fastener inside and out was loose on my 625 SXC. You'd think KTM would've learned by now...

    • Campi the Bat on Dec 22, 2019

BMW gets it right: quality Torx hardware, factory-applied thread lock compound. They may be tanks but the R series bikes are generally a joy to work on.

    • Jon Jones on Dec 22, 2019

      Will keep that in mind!

    • Sayyed Bashir on Dec 23, 2019

My 2014 Panigale 899 had parts falling off initially but they have all been taken care of. Love my Ducati and my KTMs regardless of what others may say. As you said, they are visceral, including my Harley. The Bandit is powerful and fast but is not a V-twin.

    • Jon Jones on Dec 23, 2019

I'm also on the hunt for a nice used 900SS or Monster. My buddy is also working on selling me his clean but quirky Multistrada. Just waiting for the price to drop.

I miss my lovely 900SS CR that was destroyed when a bike in front of me dropped its drain plug at a track day.

Funny, wasn't that enthused about buying it in the first place, but one test ride was all it took.

    • Sayyed Bashir on Dec 24, 2019

A super sport seems too gentrified to me. The Panigale is a real race bike.

    • Jon Jones on Dec 25, 2019

Agreed, but a tad too pricey for me at this point.

    • TonyCarlos on Jan 05, 2020

I believe Loctite is actually owned by the Euros.

    • Sayyed Bashir on Jan 05, 2020

U.S. company since 1953, acquired by Henkel in 1997.
