Around the world on a Multistrada
Tue, 07 Jun 2011Ever since Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman rode their BMW’s around the world it seems anyone with a ‘GS’ has an open ticket to ride around the world and then write about it. And fair enough, if I could afford the bike and the trip then I’d be gone as well.
Obviously, BMW reaped the rewards when Ewan and Charlie showcased what their GS could really do, changing BMW’s image from solid but stuffy, to solid and cool overnight.
It made me wonder if anyone had attempted the same around the world trip on Ducati’s new Multistrada. All the tests claimed it was more than capable of doing so and it seems that every manufacturer wants a slice of BMW’s GS Adventure sales pie.
Well, it turns out that someone has done just that, on a Multistrada 1200 S Touring.
Paolo Pirozzi of the Naples Ducati Owners Club (DOC) decided to visit 80 DOC, in 80 countries, riding nearly 60,000 miles over 350 days. Mr. Pirozzi was sponsored and supported by Ducati and Pirelli for the entire adventure.
It seems Ducati are trying to add ‘tough’ to their already cool image, and this trip goes a long way to distance them from their reputation of old as unreliable and temperamental.
