AMA Supercross: 2012 Houston Results
Mon, 02 Apr 2012Ryan Villopoto has captured the 2012 AMA Supercross Championship with a dominating performance at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas.
The Monster Energy Kawasaki racer took the lead early in the race after passing holeshot-taker Davi Millsaps on the opening lap. Villopoto would lead the rest of the way for his eighth win of the season.
At 296 points and just four rounds remaining, Villopoto has an insurmountable lead in the championship standings over Red Bull KTM‘s Ryan Dungey who missed his fourth consecutive race due to injury. While his main competitors have been out with various injuries, Villopoto has been simply dominant, winning 23 of the last 46 AMA Supercross events.
“This is what it is all about,” says Villopoto. “Winning championships is why every one of us lines up behind the gate and I am so happy to win my second Supercross title and to go back-to-back is unreal. I’m glad I got it out of the way early, I knew I had a good chance to clinch the title here in Houston and it feels good to have it behind me now. Everyone on the Monster Energy Kawasaki team has worked hard this year and we showed that hard work pays off.”
Finishing second in Houston was Millsaps, vaulting him past his JGRMX Yamaha teammate James Stewart to third in the championship standings.
Third place went to Villopoto’s teammate, Jake Weimer who had a solid hold on the final podium spot after passing MotoConcepts Suzuki’s Mike Alessi on Lap 3.
