AMA Ice Racing Grand Championship Adds Ice Moto Competition
Mon, 03 Feb 2014If you’ve been paying attention around here, you’ll know that we love ice racing here on Motorcycle.com. Editors Troy Siahaan and Tom Roderick got a first-hand taste of ice racing last winter, and we got a real kick out of seeing racers Brad Baker, Jared Mees and Nichole Mees taking Harley-Davidson Street 750s onto ice during the Winter X Games.
That’s why we’re looking forward to the American Motorcyclist Association Ice Racing Grand Championships, Feb. 8-9 at the Mitchell State Campground in Cadillac, Mich.
This year’s championship will be adding a twist, with a new ice moto competition to the Saturday schedule. While typical ice racing courses are held on short track or half-mile style oval tracks, the ice moto race will be held on a one-mile course with both left- and right-hand turns.
“Ice moto is not really new, but while you do see it occasionally at some local events and at casual, recreational rides, this is the first time it has been run as a warm up for the national championship event,” says Patrick Grzebinski from event promoter North American Action Sports LLC. “The course will include both right- and left-hand turns, much like a road race course. This type of racing attracts motocross racers, woods racers and trail riders. We expect to have approximately a 1-mile-long ice moto course.”
