2020 Husqvarna EE 5 Electric Dirt Bike Enters Production
Tue, 25 Jun 2019Husqvarna has entered the electric motorcycle market, launching the new EE 5 electric dirt bike as a 2020 model. The 2020 Husqvarna EE 5 is designed for young riders, with an all-new electric powertrain that claims an equivalent performance level to a 50cc gasoline-powered dirt bike.
Perhaps the biggest surprise about Husqvarna’s first electric model was that the EE 5 is not based on KTM’s e Freeride platform. Instead, the EE 5 uses its own 5 kW electric motor and chromoly frame, both designed for young motocross riders that it will share with the KTM SX-E 5 that will also be launching soon. The motor is powered by a 907 Wh lithium-ion battery, which Husqvarna claims will provide two hours of casual riding or 25 minutes of racing. Using the supplied charger, Husqvarna claims the battery can be fully charged in 70 minutes (and an 80% charge in 45 minutes).
The EE 5 is equipped with a 35 XACT air fork from WP Suspension, offering 8.1 inches of travel. WP also provides the fully-adjustable rear shock offering 7.3 inches of travel. The EE 5’s default seat height is 26.5 inches but it can be lowered to 25.7 inches for smaller or less experienced riders. This can be done by lowering the bodywork and seat and changing the rear shock’s mounting position and lowering the forks within the triple clamps. Husqvarna will also offer a lowered suspension kit that can reduce the height to just 21.9 inches.
Other features include six selectable ride modes, a NEKEN handlebar, MAXXIS tires, and a wrist lanyard kill switch that turns off the motor in the event of a fall. Husqvarna claims a weight of 89.3 pounds, or about 2.2 pounds lighter than the claimed weight of a TC 50.
The 2020 Husqvarna EE 5 will arrive in North American showrooms in the fall. Pricing remains to be determined.
