2012-2013 Triumph Speed Triple Transmission Recall Now Includes US

As we expected, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a recall for the 2012-2013 Triumph Speed Triple because the transmission may have been built with the wrong detent arm spring. A similar recall was announced for Canada earlier this month, so we knew it was a matter of time before the recall was announced for the U.S. market.

According to Triumph, the detent spring which helps a transmission stay in gear may not be the correct thickness. This may result in what Triumph calls a “poor quality gear change” which could potentially knock the transmission right out of gear while the motorcycle is in motion.

The recall affects 349 units of the 2012-2013 Triumph Speed Triple. Recall documents released by NHTSA list several other models affected by the same problem, though no units from any of these models in the U.S. are included the recall. These other models include the non-ABS Speed Triple, the Speed Triple R (with and without ABS), the Tiger 1050, the Tiger Sport, the Sprint ST and the Sprint GT. 

Triumph dealers will install a revised detent arm spring with the correct thickness on recalled units.

This new recall comes on the heels of another recall for the 2012-2013 Speed Triple. The earlier recall is for a faulty neutral indicator light that may incorrectly light up even when the transmission is in gear.
