Developed from the Rapide, with Comet cams and an increased compression ratio, producing 55bhp and allowing a top speed of 120mph it became so popular that production numbers exceeded those of the Rapide. Technically advanced, the 998cc v-twin engine was used as a stressed member instead of being carried inside the frame and with new features such as girdraulic forks, sprung rear sub-frame and a unit construction engine, all weighing under 460lb (about the same as a pre-war 500cc bike). The name ‘Black’ Shadow was appropriate as the entire bike was coloured black including enamel crank-case covers which made it quite different from anything else at a time when the trend was for engines and parts to be polished and chromed. Other visual changes included the addition of a 150mph speedometer. Philip Vincent was not prepared to compromise the quality of his machines and in the face of escalating costs the company closed its’ doors in 1955, by which time fewer than 1,700 Black Shadows had been produced. Size 420mm x 297mm (16.54" x 11.69") Payment accepted by Paypal Browse through more illustrated items in our ebay shop (George Morgan Illustration) |

Video: 180bhp N2O injected Vincent
Tue, 21 Feb 2012The Greek God Epithemeus - the name of this three-wheeled, 180bhp Vincent record breaker - was the brother of Prometheus. Epithemeus (meaning afterthought) was the creator of many dangerous, ill thought-out beasts. Unlike his dilligent brother, Epithemeus was a bit of a f**kwit who threw everything at his powerful new animal creations with little thought of the consequences. A perfect name, then.
