Other Standard Sport Rex 350 description
1940 Standard Sport Rex 350 Rolling chassis -- engine, frame, wheels, handlebars -- of the super-rare Standard, made in Germany. Company president Wilhelm Gutbrod founded Standard Fahrzeugfabrik in 1926, eventually moving the company to the city of Plochingen, where he produced motorcycles & cars. This is the Sport Rex 350 model with optional rear swingarm-plunger arrangement, making the Standard the first German bike to be equipped with modern rear suspension. Front suspension is by Standard's girder design. The engine, a twin-port, inclined-cylinder ohv single with bevel-shaft valve actuation, is largely complete, missing the rocker covers, bevel/shaft & magneto. All cylinder fins are intact, the front oil sump & rounded primary cover are without damage, the only exterior flaw is a missing chunk of the 'sling shield' above the countershaft sprocket (see photo 20). Condition of engine internals is not known but assume inspection/overhaul will be required. Brake drums appear to have been drilled for lightness/cooling by the former owner, noted machinist/collector Homer Knapp. Available for inspection by appointment, clear California title, exact mileage unknown. Note to international buyers: We offer free delivery to the shippers of your choice in/near the Port of Long Beach. |
