 Vintage 1964 Raleigh RM-5 Moped

Raleigh in England made a series of Moped over the years and this is a mid-sixties version of one of their models. The frame components are similar to what they made their bicycles out of but everything is beefier and stronger. Raleigh was licensed to use the French Mobylette power train on their series of mopeds. It is a simple and sturdy engine and power transmission set-up and is easy to find parts for as the Mobylette engine was used by many manufacturers. This bike uses the earlier non-variator version of the Mobylette engine / transmission. Service parts are also mostly available for the Raleigh bike. I’ve shipped a bunch of stuff over from England when I originally did this project.

I’ve had this moped for about six years and I have too many wheels here and am doing some thinning out. It was a sad and neglected bike when I got it so I took the whole thing apart, sand-blasted all down to bare metal and had the parts painted a ‘hod rod’ semi-flat black by a professional automobile painter.

I took the engine completely apart and rebuilt it with new bearings, rings and seals. The cylinder, piston and crank were fine. It fires up easily and runs excellently and everything works well.

Besides rebuilding the engine I replaced and repacked the wheel bearings, it got two new drive chains and a drive belt. I rebuilt the carburetor and it has a new ignition coil. The tires have been okay for me but they are age cracked. The tubes are new.

I had the seat dyed and the lights work. The tank is clean and the fuel petcock was replaced.

It is a two stroke motor and I use a 20:1 mix. It’s no rocket ship off the line but after about 5mph it pulls strong and tops out at a blistering 25 mph. There are no issues at all with this bike, it is turn key ready to go, that is if it had a key. There is no title for this moped. A bill of sale I can provide.

While not being entirely rare not too many of these were imported to the states and likely you would be the only one in your town with a sixties Raleigh moped.Local pick-up is preferred but it would be possible for me to get it onto a pallet if you make all the trucking arrangements. I have no way of hauling it anywhere.
