Other Maico 490 description

Up for auction is a 1981 Maico Mega 490. Motocross Action magazine described the 1981 Maico Mega 490 the greatest open-class motocross bike of all time!

This particular motorcycle sat in a private collection, located in Newark NJ , for over 20 years. The motor was partially disassembled when I purchased the bike 2 years ago. I had dreams of restoring the bike and riding it in the twin shock AHRMA motocross vintage races. The bike was completely disassembled, paying particular attention to keeping as much of the original pieces as possible.

The motor was shipped to SoCal Maico for a complete rebuild, and then sent to local retired Factory Maico race legend, Mickey Kessler, for fine tuning. The original Bing carburetor was rebuilt, frame & handle bars powder coated, seat recovered, cables & grips replaced, new front fender installed, front suspension rebuilt & wheel bearing were replaced.

The original exhaust pipe was repaired and I believe the original Metzeler tires were re-installed (they definitely need to be replaced if the bike is going to be ridden vs displayed). There was virtually no wear on the original foot pegs, which indicates very low riding hours.

Once completed, I started and rode the bike one time. I discovered it had way  too much power for my 51 year old body to handle. I collect street bikes, so I decided to sell this fine original example to make room in my garage. There are tons of performance parts available for this bike, but I tried to keep as many of the original parts as possible, including the suspension system and electrical system.  In my experience, keeping  the motorcycle as oringinal as possible brings more long term value.

This bike DOES NOT have a title, but I will be happy to supply a written bill of sale. This is a 32 year old vintage dirt bike. No reputable person warrantees vintage dirt bikes, so neither do I. Remember, Maico did not warranty this bike when new. Even though the motor was built by a professional mechanic, all vintage bikes will need something adjusted, replaced, repaired, fine tuned or modified, BY YOU before you ride or race them.

Winner must pay a deposit of $500 via Paypal within 24 hrs of the end of the auction.  I WILL NOT accept PayPal for total payment of bike.  I accept cash in person, bank checks, or bank wire transfers. This motorcycle will not leave my possession until your funds have cleared my bank. Please e-mail me with any questions, I will do my best to give a fare and accurate response.
