Husqvarna Desert Master description
Immpeccably restored Desert Master. It would be a showpiece in any collection.
Mileage in the description are for reference only. Actual mileage is of course unknown.
Since the previous owner very famliar with the restoration process he saw the bike through, he has graciously allowed me to use the copy of his listing and that listing is in the red font.
Husqvarna is well known for its strong role in the launch of professional US motocross in the late 60’s but many don’t realize that Husqvarna was also highly influential in the off-road market. Husqvarna’s popularity in the desert was apparent in the late 60’s and grew through the 70’s so much so that in the early eighties Cycle World wrote “Husqvarna has seen more success in the desert than on the MX track!”.
This restored Desert Master was purchased about 15 years ago from an elderly woman whose husband had passed away. At that time the bike had surprisingly low hours and the bike hasn't been ridden since. Before restoration there was no sign of chain rash on swing arm components or the engine cases. The underside of the frame was free of gashes that typically occur from impacts with large rocks. There were no dents in the pipe or the tank. When disassembled the motor revealed little wear. The existing piston was standard and the clutch plate stack measurement was far from the minimum allowed. The bike was just an all around super clean Desert Master.
During restoration a new standard piston was installed because the original std piston had a nasty scar but there were no marks on the cylinder sleeve. The new piston clearance on the freshly honed cylinder sleeve is .003 (replacement is recommended at .008) and the new ring gap is .016 (replacement recommended at .028).
The 5-speed CR gear-set is in very good condition. Three gearbox bearings were rough so they were replaced, all other bearings where smooth. The existing clutch stack is 30mm, which is still within the limits of being in excellent condition.
Re-chromed items include the fork tubes, chain guide, shock shrouds, spoke nipples, and fuel tank.
Vintage Husky did the frame and tank paint.
Buchanan’s Spoke and Rim in Los Angeles trued the wheels, torque the spokes, and mounted the tires.
After being reassembled the engine under went and passed a bench-top leak down test.
The carburetor has been dipped and cleaned inside and out.
The fuel tank has been de-rusted.
The new tires are period correct Metzlers, rear 400/18 and front 325/21.
The throttle is the stock double cable Magura.
Grips and lever controls are original Magura.
The existing Bufo bolts and spokes were zinc plated. There are two bolts on the rear tank mount and one bolt on the silencer mount that are not Bufo.
New items include:
Control Cables with oilers
Handle Bars
Chain
Seat Cover
Exhaust Silencer
Tires and Tubes
Three Engine Bearings
Engine Gaskets and Seals
Front and Rear Wheel Bearings and Seals
NGK Spark Plugs
Red nylon lock nuts.

Misc. Rubber Parts include period correct fuel line and crankcase vent hose, Magura throttle cable dust cap, Sparky plug cap, front rubber tank mounts, Magura grips, rubber fender washers.
