Honda CX description
This motorcycle was found locally in Western North Carolina where it has been parked in a garage for a number of years. According to the previous owner, it was very briefly put in service in 2010. Shortly after the bike was parked. It has not been outside since that time.
When I picked the bike up there was only basic work done to the bike. I pressure washed it. I had the carburetors cleaned out. I put a new battery on it. Cranked the bike but it was never ridden. The bike idles rough and will probably need a new carburetor kit and all-around tune up. The tires hold air but the road ready condition is not known. Please be sure about the tires before you try to ride. The brakes are in an unknown condition other than they engage while moving the bike around our shop. There is only one key as seen in the pictures. No helmet or any other equipment that is not in the picture is included.
The overall appearance of the bike is great to be 37+ years old. The gas tank has a nice patina on it. The Windjammer windshield is intact and functional. The pictures are of the actual bike in the condition that you will find it. These are my opinions on the conditions and cautions are mine.
This bike has a ton of potential to restore to stock or even make a modified cruiser. There is a ton of upside for this bike. The starting bid is very reasonable for the condition.
I mentioned it in the payment information about picking the bike up in Murphy, NC. I stated that if the distance is reasonable (< 200 miles) and you delivery schedule is flexible (weekends) you can arrange for someone to deliver. However the full payment for the bike and the quoted delivery charge must be taken care of in advance. The person delivering the bike cannot and will not handle any money.
The title is a clear and from North Carolina. Please find out in advance what your state requires in terms of paperwork to obtain your new title.
Here is some background from the Web:
The Honda CX500 Custom was one of the most "ahead of its time" creations in motorcycle design and had very impressive styling when it was launched in 1979. The engine design was considered radical, but has since proven to be incredibly long lived. Production years are generally listed as 1979-1982 although it appears some were produced in 1983 before the model was bumped to a 650cc engine.
Radical design? The angle of the V- twin engine was only 80 degrees, not the customary 90. The cylinder heads integrated a slight twist to angle the carbs inwards to prevent them striking the riders knees. Due to this twist, the fitting of overhead cams were impossible, so the four valves per cylinder were operated by push rods. The clutch was geared to rotate in the opposite direction of the crankshaft, to cancel out any torque reaction. It handled very well for the standards of its day although a bit top heavy, and boasted a top speed of around 105mph. The CX 500 Custom was heavy enough for the interstate yet was incredibly nimble around town. Considering the basic specs; a low maintenance 500CC 4 valve per cylinder engine, water cooled, shaft drive, alloy wheels, and tubeless tires, what was not to love? At $2498.00 US it was the most expensive of all of the CX 500 models when it was initially released.
