The 999 was named by the press the best twin cylinder engine ever produced. Ducati intended to create a Superbike of stunning design that improves rider ergonomics, makes maintenance easier, reduces complexity of the motorcycle and offers performance second to none. The debut of the twin-cylinder motorcycles was made in 1988, when Marco Lucchinelli was riding a Ducati 851 at the World Superbike Championship. It had an output of 128 hp at 11500 rpm. The 851 evolved to the 888, 916, 996, and 998, the last one with an output of 188 hp.

Compared to its predecessors, the 999 contains hundreds of improvements and innovative technological solutions, and represents a true generational leap forward.

Powered by a Testastretta Desmodromic engine, with an output of 140 hp at 9750 rpm, the 999 represents the pure sports bike: purposefully long, low, and narrow, with the ability to cheat the wind at speed. Saltarelli Classic Ducati Collection Up for Auction

One of the world’s largest private collections of Ducati motorcycles is going on the auction block. Former Ducati factory test rider, racer and dealer Carlo Saltarelli is selling his collection of classic motorcycles at RM Auction‘s biennial auction in Monaco on May 11-12 during the Grand Prix of Monaco Historique. Saltarelli’s collection includes 100 motorcycles including a 1970 ex-Works Ducati 450 Desmo Corsa which was featured in the Ducati museum in Bologna, Italy.

Ducati unveiled its Desmosedici GP12 race bikes in on online presentation streamed over Facebook. With the machine officially revealed, the pressure now turns to factory riders Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden who try to rebound in the 2012 MotoGP World Championship after a difficult 2011 season. The 2012 livery adds a touch of green striping resembling the tricolore version of the Ducati 1199 Panigale S and celebrating the company’s Italian heritage.
