1927 Barry Lupino Romberg's "love Call" Veloz+yolanda // "the Desperado" on 2040-motos

Dual playbill for Shubert-managed theatres in Philadelphia showcase the pre-Broadway tryout of the Sigmund Romberg musical THE LOVE CALL and the tryout of the Barry Conners drama THE DESPERADO.

THE LOVE CALL would open on Broadway one week after this Philadelphia engagement, and play 89 performances at the Majestic Theatre.  It starred BARRY LUPINO.  With VELOZ & YOLANDA, Joseph Macauley, Violet Carlson, Carlos Mejia, Frank Erwin, John L. King, Bradley F. Lane, Shep Camp, Jane Egbert, W.L. Thorne, Charles Lawrence, Alice Fischer, Berna Deane, William Balfour, Lora Sonderson, Wilfred Lucas, John Rutherford, Hubert Wilke, Frederick Kaufman, Stanley Jessup, Frank King, and Ruth Ann Watson.  Music by Romberg, lyrics by Harry B. Smith, book by Edward Locke, staged by J.C. Huffman, and produced by the Shuberts and Laurence Weber.

THE DESPERADO didn't survive the rigors on the road and didn't make it to Broadway.  The "romance of Central America" by Barry Conners starred Leon Gordon.  With William Challee, Escamillo Fernandez, Pauline Drake, Jack McCowan, Conway Wingfield, Ali Yousoff, Helen Stransky, Brandon Peters, Josephine Webb, H.H.
