CanAm Spyder History:

The Can-Am Spyder ("Spyder") is a three-wheeled motorcycle manufactured by Bombardier Recreational Products.[1] The vehicle has a single rear drive wheel and two wheels in front for steering, similar in layout to a modern snowmobile. The Spyder uses an ATV-like chassis. The manufacturer refers to it as a "roadster," but in technical terms it is more of what has been traditionally called a trike. The Spyder was officially launched in February 2007.[2]

Car and Driver Review

We didn't get a chance to do an instrumented test, but from our brief ride, it was obvious that the Spyder has plenty of poke. A water-cooled 1.0-liter V-2 pumps out 106 horsepower, which the company claims should be enough to propel the roughly 750-pound trike to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Frankly, it felt quicker than that, with instant response available anywhere in its 9500-rpm range. What struck us most, however, was how quickly we were piloting the Spyder with confidence. After the first few minutes of riding, we had already buried the throttle and turned hard enough to engage the nondefeatable stability-control system. Most of us wouldn't attempt riding a two-wheeler that aggressively. Another useful thing is that it helps you lean into turns. That's a good thing because, unlike in a car, the rider's body position has a noticeable effect on the vehicle's response and, in addition, leaning alleviates the uncomfortable sensation that a hard turn might eject the rider. We found that, despite the power steering, it takes a healthy push on the handlebar to turn the wheels. The suspension—aided by tires that are inflated to only 14 psi—easily soaked up bumps and potholes, however, and the brakes arrested forward momentum with striking authority.

Custom Features:

Modeled after a P-40 Aircraft, this Spyder is painted in a desert colored cammo pattern, complete with details that make it appear as though the body is comprised of multiple metal plates and held together with rivets. There are numerous bullet hole graphics and the iconic American Star. It has .50cal machine gun barrels sticking out the front. I promise you, less people cut you off when you have machine gun barrels on your vehicle. It comes with a Gatlin Gun exhaust and a standard exhaust if the Gatlin Gun is too loud. FYI, it's really loud... but the barrels spin like a real Gatlin Gun. A grenade is attached to the side, too. There are plenty of spare parts, too. I have extra wheels and rims (the stock ones). I have an extra handle bar (the stock one that shows the production number, as this was one of the first off the line). As mentioned, there is an extra exhaust. There are also some pegs, windshield and other items. There is also a Garmin navigation system attached to the handlebar. It even has a tow hitch for a trailer. This is a road tripping bike.

If you are interested, there's a trailer that is also painted in the same style, only it keeps a raw aluminum feel to the riveted metal plates. Let me know after the auction ends if you'd like it ($750).

Bike History and Why I'm Selling:

I bought the bike, had 3 kids in 3 years. No time to ride. I hit up Afghanistan a couple times. The bike has always known a garage and it has been in California, exclusively. Now I have orders to DC and desperately need a down payment for a house for our growing family. I must say goodbye to this mad max bike.

Can-Am Spyder Hybrid Roadster Development Update [Video]

Tue, 13 Dec 2011

It’s been about a year since Bombardier Recreational Products announced it was developing a hybrid version of the Can-Am Spyder Roadster. Developed in partnership with the Advanced Technology Center at Sherbrooke University in Quebec and with funding from the Government of Canada, the hybrid Spyder is an ambitious project for BRP. We met up with Scott MacWilliam from BRP at the Toronto Motorcycle Show to take a look at a working prototype of the Can-Am’s hybrid three-wheeler.

Motorcycles at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show

Mon, 28 Sep 2009

Two weeks ago, I took a break from my regular duties gathering news for Motorcycle.com to fly to Germany to cover the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show for our sister site AutoGuide.com. For two hectic days, AutoGuide editor Colum Wood and I scrambled across the massive 6.2 million square foot Messe Frankfurt trade fair compound, running from press conference to press conference to get the latest on exotic sport cars, futuristic concept models and international unveilings from the automotive world. It was heaven for car lovers, but for me, it meant fighting my way through hordes of photogs, auto-journalists and car show models to get the first photos of four-wheeled goodies from MINI, Ferrari and Lotus.
