BMW Makes ABS Standard Across Entire Lineup

BMW announced it will make anti-lock brakes standard equipment across its entire lineup starting with the 2013 model year. The German manufacturer became the first to introduce ABS into serial production motorcycles in 1988 and now 25 years later, BMW will be the first to offer ABS across all of its models. BMW has already announced two 2013 models that will come with ABS, the updated F800GS and the F700GS.

BMW has updated its F800GS and introduced the F700GS which replaces the F650GS for the German manufacturer’s 2013 lineup. The 2013 BMW F800GS slots in under the R1200GS as the company’s mid-displacement adventure tourer while the F700GS is an entry-level model to the segment. Despite the nomenclature, both models are equipped with liquid-cooled and fuel-injected four-valve 798cc twin-cylinder engines, just like the 650.

Max Biaggi strengthened his hold on the 2012 World Superbike Championship lead with a pair of wins at Italy’s Misano circuit. The Aprilia rider out-battled the Althea Ducati duo of Carlos Checa and Davide Giugliano to win Race One before taking a relatively easier Race Two victory. Before the races, WSBK riders lined up on the starting grid to hold a banner expressing their support for the Emilia region in northern Italy which has been suffering from earthquakes and continuing aftershocks since late May.

Shot at a BMW test facility, the photos reveal a half-faired motorcycle with the S1000RR’s engine.

40,000 bikers to descend on Garmisch-Partenkirchen

40,000 bikers are expected to head to the Bavarian town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen during the first week of July for the annual BMW Motorrad Days event and you can join them. Billed as a celebration of all things two-wheeled and BMW, the event gives you a chance to test ride all the current BMW Motorrad and Husqvarna models and see stunt-riding world champion Chris Pfeiffer and meet the BMW World Superbike riders. BMW have organised a UK rideout to the event and with over 200 places taken so far, time's running out to book your slot.

Marco Melandri earned BMW its second ever World Superbike victory to move into second place in the championship standings behind Max Biaggi in the series’ only stop in the United States. Melandri won a red-flagged Race Two at Utah’s Miller Motorsports Park after finishing second to defending WSBK Champion Carlos Checa in Race One to give him 142.5 points on the season, tied with Kawasaki‘s Tom Sykes but behind Aprilia‘s Biaggi who leads the way with 160.5 points. BMW is entering the scooter market this year with its C600 Sport and C650 GT maxi-scooters, but the German manufacturer almost entered the scooter segment nearly 60 years earlier. In the 1950s, BMW produced a pair of scooter prototypes it called the R10. The first prototype produced in 1953 was equipped with a 175cc Single producing about 8hp while the 1954 prototype (pictured above) was equipped with a 200cc producing about 10hp.
