Word Studies on the New Testament

Complete four volume set.

By Marvin R. Vincent, D. D., Baldwin Professor of Sacred Literature in Union Theological Seminary, New York.

Grand Rapids: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. Originally published in 1887, this a 1976 reprint.

Black cloth hardcovers, 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches, the books are in fine clean condition - no problems with the bindings, no writing in the books. The closed page edges have some spots, but there are no spots on the open text pages. Previous owner’s name and written date on the fly pages.

The method used by the author is to go through the New Testament verse by verse and point out the important words in the Greek that help to convey the meaning of the text, and giving in English the meaning of that word, where it is used elsewhere in sacred and secular writings, and in some cases how it has been translated in other English versions.

The Word Studies in the New Testament by Marvin R. Vincent (1834-1922) was first published in 1887 in four volumes. Since that time, the more than 2600 pages of this classic work have helped the English reader better understand the Bible in its original Greek language. Now the full richness of the original meaning, history, derivation, grammar, and usage of important New Testament words is accessible to the average English reader.

Vincent's Word Studies falls half-way between an exegetical commentary and a Greek lexicon. It is actually a study, in commentary form, of the vocabulary of the New Testament. This format gives Vincent the opportunity to not only discuss the subtle distinctions in meaning between different Greek words, but also to comment on the history contained in a word that might get lost in a translation. He reveals the characteristics in writing style and word usage of a particular Bible writer, pointing out the marvelous interplay of the different Greek tenses and the nicely-calculated force of the Greek article. Vincent explains in detail the proper usage and meaning of Greek idioms and the connection between different English words that are translated from the same Greek word. These fine points often cannot be brought out in a translation, but in the pages of Vincent's Word Studies, all of these language barriers are removed. - studylight dot org.

Record Breaking Vincent Black Shadow Is Top Seller At Bonhams Auction

Mon, 29 Apr 2013

A fully restored, ex-works 1952 Vincent Black Shadow was the top selling motorcycle at the Bonhams auction, held at the International Classic Motorcycle Show at the Staffordshire County Showground on Sunday, April 28, selling for £113,500 (US $176,341 after premiums). This Black Shadow was part of the factory’s bid to set a new 24-hour speed record at Montlhéry in France in May 1952. Mechanical troubles prevented that from happening, but the team still came away with eight records, including six hours at over 100 mph.

The Greek God Epithemeus - the name of this three-wheeled, 180bhp Vincent record breaker - was the brother of Prometheus. Epithemeus (meaning afterthought) was the creator of many dangerous, ill thought-out beasts. Unlike his dilligent brother, Epithemeus was a bit of a f**kwit who threw everything at his powerful new animal creations with little thought of the consequences. A perfect name, then.

The New Age Of Custom Motorcycles – Video

Mon, 26 Aug 2013

In a world where modern motorcycles are full of computers, sensors and plastic, there are still those folks who yearn for the days of yore. A time when motorcycles were made of metal and you used a wrench — not a keyboard — to make your bike go faster. Careful and skilled craftsmanship, along with independent thinking, is a mark of pride among these men and their machines, some of whom are featured in the video below by Gestalten.tv.
