This is a 1953 Mustang Pony "Special".  The Special model came from the factory with a high compression head and factory race camshaft.  These factory options increased horsepower from 9.5 to 10.5 H.P.  This motorcycle runs and rides nicely.

Alan Wenzel (Mustang Motorcycle Club of America) indicates that this particular motorcycle was manufactured 5/16/53 and was sold to Valley Cycles in San Bernardino, CA.  Factory color was red.

This motorcycle was restored about 10 years ago from its former owner in Arizona.  The paint is a two-tone red metallic scheme.  Gas tank halves are original, fenders are a nice reproduction. There are a few touch ups here and there but the paint still shows well as can be seen from the pictures. The deep red metallic was a bit hard to pick up with my camera so I tried to take pictures in several different lighting conditions.

This motorcycle has recently been gone through from front to back.  Here are the specifics:
  • Engine was completely disassembled, inspected and measured against the factory specifications.  To my surprise the former owner must have had the cylinder sleeved back to original specs.  The cylinder showed almost no wear and had no taper - in fact I could still see some of the cross hatch marks from when it had been previously honed.   Standard piston is in great shape - new standard rings were installed and cylinder was honed again.
  • Valves were measured - there was some wear on the valves.  Although they were still within spec I decided to go ahead and do a complete valve job.  Valves are all new along with new valve guides, springs and keepers. Valves adjusted to factory specs.
  • Installed new flap valve in the breather
  • Completely serviced all electrics.  Flywheel magnets recharged by Alan Wenzel using factory Mustang jig.  New wire harness installed and new high-output brake light coil was installed. New points and condenser.  Tail light cover is new.
  • Installed new primary sprocket (22 tooth) along with new primary chain.
  • The clutch on this motorcycle is a pretty nifty setup - it is a dry clutch so no oil is required in the primary (and thus no leaks from the primary).  The clutch uses the standard Mustang clutch basket but the clutch plates are made specifically for a dry clutch operation.  Clutch operates beautifully and takes very little effort to operate.
  • Gas tank halves were professionally cleaned, etched and coated with POR-15 gas tank liner. New gas lines installed between gas tank halves.
  • Rear brake disassembled, cleaned and adjusted.
This motorcycle has a clean Illinois title in my name.  I would be happy to answer any other questions you may have about this motorcycle.
