BMW R description

Selling a custom 1992 BMW R100r tracker built by us at Spirit Lake Cycles. Named "Miss Thriller",  we built this bike as our show bike for the year and now were selling it to fund other projects. The bike is titled and registered in my name.

The BMW R100r is the little known mid to late 90's model that never really caught on in the US. It uses many newer GS components and is a perfect candidate for a modified bike. The motto of this build was to have a clean bike that would perform as well as it looked.
The suspension sports a fully adjustable Ohlins rear and progressive front fork springs. The front of the bike was lowered a few inches to get the stance just right. The engine and rear drive where all media blasted and treated to a matte silver high temp finish. The frame is powder coated gloss white to match the double BMW inspired pin-striping. The rear tail section is all hand built to enclose the integrated tail mounted exhaust and led taillight. Next up was the tank and we chose a Norton commando 750 as the starting point, it has been slightly reshaped to house the ignition switch and fit the frame. The air box was removed and replaced with a hand built cover along with the all custom 2 into 1 air cleaner assembly that was from a 70's era muscle car. The handle bars has been cleared of all the factory switch gear and a custom clutch and brake assembly have been fitted. The wheels are fully polished and the spokes are custom stainless units. The seat is also a custom piece that is done in oxblood leather to mimic the scheme of the Jaguar E-Type Lightweight race cars from the 60's. Pin striping was handled by Leftys Pinstriping and has all free hand lettering on the tank.
The name Miss Thriller comes from a vintage speed boat that used to prowl Spirit Lake in Iowa, reportedly the fastest commercial speedboat in the United States in the 1920's using two aircraft engines. It was involved in a serious crash and sunk killing all of the passengers, this bike uses its namesake and tries to evoke the spirit of a once famous race craft with its sleek lines and E-Type Lightweight inspired paint along with the scalloped pin striping and hand lettered tires.

The bike has also won Best Cafe at the 2015 VVMC Motorcycle Rally and has been featured on Pipeburn. Feel free to look us up on Facebook or Instagram as "Spirit Lake Cycles" to see more.

Were available in the Los Angeles/Downtown area in case you want to see the bike in person.

Motorcycles at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show

Mon, 28 Sep 2009

Two weeks ago, I took a break from my regular duties gathering news for Motorcycle.com to fly to Germany to cover the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show for our sister site AutoGuide.com. For two hectic days, AutoGuide editor Colum Wood and I scrambled across the massive 6.2 million square foot Messe Frankfurt trade fair compound, running from press conference to press conference to get the latest on exotic sport cars, futuristic concept models and international unveilings from the automotive world. It was heaven for car lovers, but for me, it meant fighting my way through hordes of photogs, auto-journalists and car show models to get the first photos of four-wheeled goodies from MINI, Ferrari and Lotus.

The solution to a pricey GPS mount

Wed, 26 Aug 2009

So you've gone out and bought your BMW R1200GS, you're ready to circumnavigate the globe's toughest roads - or ride over some potholes on your way to work - but you've got a dilemma: no way to mount your GPS device! So what you should do is exactly what this chap's done and use a spatula and a few rubber bands to mount-up your GPS for easy use. And the bonus is that when you get to where you're going, you can use the spatula with your BBQ and triple it up as a fly-swatter too.
